257 roberts

I gotta ask about your model 70. A friend of mine bought one identical to yours for his wife who was a smaller lady and he figured the 257 was a milder choice. When he tried it out he told me it kicked harder than his 7mm mag Sako. The model 70 had to weigh 9 lbs loaded and I can't figure why recoil was an issue unless bore was undersized? Is yours unruly for recoil? Just curious.
Hi
I think the lighter straight stock makes felt recoil more than it is
I feel my model 70 supergrade in 270 win kicks less but it is all steel and weighs a couple pounds more

I have long wanted a 257 Roberts. Always liked what I was hearing when reading about it.

I started out in the quarter bores with the 250 AI and 250 Savage. Been having fun with them to date.
Still need to finalize a load in the AI (LH Rem 700 CDL) with the 110 gr AccuBond. Fireforming Winchester brass by shooting the factory 250 Savage 100 gr ammo would produce sub-MOA groups. My wife enjoyed shooting it enough, she bought her own 250 Savage (Lipsey's Edition Ruger No.1)
I have rebarreled a Winchester Model 88 to 250 Savage with a 22" Wilson barrel in a Boyd's laminate stock. It will shoot HSM's 100 gr SGK ammo into 0.209" groups at 100 yards!

I recently acquired a beautiful custom LH Sako L591 in 257 Roberts, with a Shilen 22" barrel with 1:10 twist, in a beautiful walnut stock. With a Leupold VX-IIc 3-9 compact scope it weighs 8 lbs 1 oz. So far it will shoot the Nosler 110 gr AccuBond ammo into a 0.582" group. I am currently working on developing a load with the 115 gr Ballistic Tip. I have one load with Re-22 that requires a little more work to fine tune for its full potential. Otherwise I still have a couple more powders to try (IMR and H-4831). The challenge with this small action is the length of the magazine box...I won't be able to load out as long as I would like; can't even load out to COAL as per the reloading manuals. In the end, any load that will produce MOA will be satisfactory as the rifle is so nice, and to handle and shoot.

Hi
Any 257 roberts fans?
Always wanted one since seeing them in magazines backin the 70's and 80's.

Finally bought a 1981 Winchester Model 70 xtr fwt.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet since i had the action bedded and barrel free floated.

Beautiful rifles
Got to love that stock withe schnabel fore I purchased that same gun back in 1980 new same caliber, it has shot my biggest mulie. I love it and will never sell it.

I was at the range this morning trying a few loads(ladder) with a 110gn nosler accubond in the 257 bob AI… shot 3 and 4 are nicely hugging each other, so I think I’m on my way to have something descent! Velocity wise they are not really close though… #3 being 3054fps and #4 at 3100fps so I’m thinking I will try 3 of each at 51.5, 51.7 and 52gn of H4831SC and see if one of those will be a sub 1/2 moa load lol!

Been a 257 fan for a long time.
Currently have 3, a Ruger Mark II and a Mark II ultralight.
My favorite is my Browning BLR Model 81.
Some day I will have a Ruger #1 and a Winchester Featherweight.

Just a great cartridge.

257 Roberts is one of my last "need to have" rifles. Hoping to get one next year
The 257 Roberts is a vg chambering for deer hunting but there are better practical choices out there.

257 rifles are scarce, ammo and brass also scarce and expensive. One would be better served with a good 6.5CM or 308 for a list of reasons.

In some areas of the country like SW ONT there a caliber restrictions. So a '44 customized Mauser .257 serves one well hunting coyotes and varmint in the region.

Just saying...

I'm from southern Ontario originally. Seems to me the 270 was very popular in the caliber restricted zones as well as a bunch of others. It really is a dumb law. A 25-06 is legal but a 30-06 isn't.

I think that has a lot more to do with your physiology. I prefer straight stocks over monte Carlo stocks for recoil dispersion. But I have a fat face. - dan
