257 Weatherby?

Both of my 257 and 7mm wby have barrels that heat up fast and are all over the map in a few shots
Would be fine for long distance shooting at one or two coyotes. They are quite overbore, so heat generation is big. Most of the rifles chambered in .257Roy have fairly slim barrels. Ammo is expensive.
What about 6mm Remington or something like that? Can do deer, and won't heat up as much for when the dog action is hot. Waaaaaaaayyy cheaper to shoot or reload for.

Na, those little bullets just bounce right off.:D Six on this load.

Nice truck load of deer there...I picked up a .257 wby sub moa from a member about a month ago and it looks like a real sweet shooting rifle.every thing was included but it doesnt look like I will get a chance to shoot it till next spring......but my load to play with is gonna be 117 grain hornady BTSP over a charge of H 4831...:D

If the H 4831 doesnt work out at least my .340 Wby will guzzle it down like a drunk at a free bar...:D

Howdy boys, try 68 grains of imr 7828 fed 215 primer and the hornady 120, I found it's just as accurate as H4831 but 150 fps faster. I get 3330 fps out of my ulta lightweight mark5 and regular 1.5" groups at 300 meters.

That load doesn't seem to be working, you should try something else :sniper:

I do have a TSX load that is great for watching deer run, then fall over when they feel like it. My kid won't use them anymore, prefering this one that makes them just drop and quiver a bit. 12 year kids these days won't listen. Now that he's shot 5 in two days I fear he never will.

Damn kids just never listen do they! Congrats on what looks like an awesome day. Too bad you drive a Chevy though....if you had a Ford you could have filled a few more tags! :D

257 weatherby

I shoot a 257 on a 700 action with a Galliard barrel .602 at muzzel and I get .5'' groups with 110gr. accubonds and 115gr partitions with retumbo powder at 3500-3400 fps. I have shot deer with it and I think it is as good as it gets for animals that size, flat shooting with low recoil.

Not quite the same.
The 7mm Weatherby is just an expensive 7mm Remington. The .257 Weatherby is on my someday list, but for folks who were attracted to "tomorrow's rifles today" today has become yesterday, and some Weatherby cartridges have fallen from glory. Not so the .257 or for that matter the 30/378, .378, 416, or .460.

Nothing wrong with an Ultramag, or a great deal of other cartridges. The .257 was just a way of getting the velocities I prefer without knocking a 100 pound kid on his keister.

100% correct many of our spouces that enjoy taking a stand, get turned off of hunting because of the shooting part. I bought and tuned up a 243 for my cousins wife this year, with modest recoil she not only does not mind the recoil but her confidence level is through the roof on making the shot. I had her breaking clays out to 250 yards this fall as she enjoyed now the shooting part, with the 100 gr bullet from the 243 vs the 30-06 she was shooting. It was funny I loaded the gun for her with a few empties the flinch was wild BAD with the 30-06 and after about 6 rounds out of the 243 I loaded a dud, it was gone and broke the dud shot like a benchrest shooter making a shot, managed recoil I agree in 100%.

Shooting has to be enjoyed to be accurate

I liked 72.7 grains of H1000, Win Mag Primer, Weatherby brass, 115 grain TSX or 117 grain SST. Barnes seated 0.025" over SAAMI, Hornady seated 0.035" over SAAMI. Gave me 5/8", 3 round, 100m groups. I don't have my data in front of me for the velocity. Wasn't at the top of Wby performance, but plenty fast and flat enough.
