260 rem

I had a Sako 85 in .260, great shooter, but I wanted lighter, so built a custom .260 on a Sako 75 action. Great round, use 100gr for coyote, 130gr for deer. This rifle will be in my safe fo'eva...

I had two different Remington 700 Mountain Rifles in 260, both were great. Today I am running a Tikka T3 Hunter in 6.5x55.

Virtually identical, in a modern rifle I use the 260 velocities in load development in my 6.5.

Most will agree, the 260 is a superb all around cartridge. I have a Sako 85 in it, I have 130 gr loads that work awesome on deer, 95gr Vmax loads for coyotes and varmints. Mine really likes 140gr stuff for punching tiny little groups in paper.
Lots of bullets to select from, great ballistics in the .264". It is best served by a reloader though, like it was said before factory loaded stuff is limited.

It's my coyote-to-deer gun. Factory ammo is hard to come by over here. I have loads for 85gr Sierra, 90 gr Speer, and 120gr TSX.

The selection for 6.5 x 55 is also limited. I looked at both when in the market but a Short action came available first. I compiled loads for both and have no regrets going with the .260 Remington.

260 to 6.5x55 is what 308 is to 30-06. I own all four and shoot them regularly. I don't reload, so my comment is not based on science, just feeling I get from shooting them.

I have an early (for this caliber) Rem 700 BDL SS DM and it is my favorite rifle and caliber EVER and I've owned literally hundreds. Light recoil, little blast, fantastic accuracy. With it I've shot probably 20 deer and one buffalo and most were one shot. One year in camp all of my buddies were so impressed they borrowed it and used it instead of their 7 Rem Mags and 30/06.
I started using Rem factory 140gr. bullets and they worked great. Now I use 125 to 130 premium bullets but I don't see any difference in killing power. Now that's only if you're a deer and elk hunter. I wouldn't use it on moose. And yes, I'm aware that millions of moose are killed with 6.5x55's. Lots are killed with 22 long rifles and I wouldn't reccommend that either.

I shoot the 140 A max for punching paper out to 800m @ 2770fps.

I think I would have a hard time finding a more accurate load than this. I couldn't be happier.

One of my favs, got 3 of 'em in the last year or so.

The Ruger m77 mk2 sees the most rigger time, bought it for the wife but I carried it all last season, blow up ballons and pop them out to 450 yards.

The M700 lss mtn rifle is newer and just sighted in, need to see what it likes.

I doubt my CDL SF Ltd Edition will ever get fired though.

Federal fusions and ballistic tips in 120gr shoot well for me, 125 nosler custom not so good and got some feredal 120gr TSX to try out. There is probably 10-12 different factory loadings so ammo not a big deal.

owned about six of them over the last ten years or so, awesome cartridge for 95% of hunting/shooting needs. If you handload I wouldn't hesitate

260

I'm on my second 260, it kills deer and antelope good as any other short action with factory ammo. More factory loadings are available now than before - Remington has 120 gr Accutip Boat Tail's and 140 gr Core-Lokt. Federal has about 5 choices now with the recent 120 gr Barnes and some 120 grain Federal Fusion after the usual 120 gr BT's and 140 gr soft points. Remington also had 125 grain Nosler Partitions at one time. Still waiting for someone to start factory loading 130 gr Accubonds - been saving brass in case I get the reloading bug.
