By the way you do not bale hay with a "hay-bine" either.

This is only one of the steps to mow and crush so the hay dries faster.

I think that I possibly had the first rifle, in Canada, with a Kreiger 5R barrel in my 6.5 EXTREME. I posted this on AmmoGuide 07/25/10 after preliminary tests were done.

HI Jerry AK,

Development has been very slow due to waiting on components etc. The biggest drawback has been getting the Hornady Dies as they are still not here in spite of ordering in December. I did manage to make some brass by necking down with 7mm WSSM dies, 270 WSM and finally Redding 270 WSM dies with a .294" bushing. Unfortunately I wound up putting just enough bell in the brass, about 1/2 way between the shoulder and base, to cause the loaded rounds to go in sticky and they come out sticky as well. Another problem is that there is a lot of run out at the neck and bullet which don't make accuracy tests very reliable.

I started with Retumbo at 2 grains below case full to the Berger 140 VLD seated 0.010" off the lands. I got 3100 fps average with the first 3 shoot and clean, during barrel break in, and the group measured 0.28". I suggest you start 3 grains back with Retumbo and work up to 3200fps as accuracy and pressure dictate provided you have at least a 26" barrel.

The case holds about 1/2 grain more when loaded with RL22 and RL25. I started 4 grains back from case full to the 140 VLD seated 0.030" off lands with RL25 and got 2920fps so starting at 3 grains under and working up to fullcase should get you a nice load in your rifle.

Starting with RL 22 at 6 grains below full case gave me an average of 3036fps. Working RL22 up in 1/2 grain increments to 3.5 grains under full case with the 140 VLD seated 0.030" off lands gave me 3260fps.

All groups that I shot were under under 1" at 100 yards. the Rem 9 1/2M primers show no pressure signs and there is very little ,if any, stretch at the web. I have decided to hold off further load development until I get the dies and am able to properly form the brass.

I will keep you posted. Let us know how you make out

was wondering if you have any more info on this cartridge. I am very interested in it. Have a 300 RUM I am tiring of, and the 6.5 sounds like a very nice candidate for a re barrel!

I will contact Hornady - anyone inparticular? - to see about dies. Who did your reamer, and all the other pertinent questions ;)

It is hard to believe that it is over a year since the above quoted post. It took a long time to get things put together for the 6.5-300 RCM. However we got it done in time for the deer season and it turned out to be a redounding success. Finally got loads posted.

I designed it hoping to get near 3200fps with the 140 Berger VLD, jammed 0.010" into the lands, with a full case of Retumbo at 62 grains. Another goal was to run the 140 Berger VLD at 150 to 200 fps faster than the 6.5-284 Norma and approach 264 Win Mag velocities with less powder and pressure.

One of the complaints that I heard from a 1000 yard BR shooter was that he could not control the vertical in his 6.5-284 Norma when approaching 3000fps with the 140 VLD bullets in the longer barrel. I know that his case life was much shorter, even with Lapua brass, than my chosen load in the 6.5-300RCM that I renamed the 6.5 EXTREME.

Jammed 0.010" into lands this is the load I chose with maximum case life in mind. It has proven to be a super performer by holding under 1/2 MOA @ 400 meters, with 3/4" vertical, shot in gusty 2 MPH wind (first bullet 0.33" from BULLS-EYE). Going to 500 meters, under same conditions, this load held 3/4 MOA with less than 2" vertical. This was the first time shooting past 100 yards and the hole by he bulls-eye, at 400 meters, was the first shot. The 500 Meter group is a bit low as I messed up and adjusted for 500 yards.

The young fellow that bought this rifle reported 100% kills on 500, 700 and 960 yard gongs, shooting prone from the bi-pod. He even managed to hit a 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" gong, at 960 yards, on his fifth try. He was very happy as this was his first attempt at long range shooting and the guys told him that the 3-1/2" gong had only been hit 2 or 3 times.

Unfortunately there was no opportunity to try this load on deer at 700+ yards, as intended. On the last day of the season it took a buck, on the run, at about 100 yards. Bullet entered high behind shoulder, broke a rib and dumped all of its 2544.3 ft. lbs. energy into the backbone. Deer dropped dead in mid stride and only a small entry hole, with little meat damage, was found.

Similar results were reported when a coyote presented a front chest shot. Small entry hole with complete devastation of the internal organs and no exit.

I am looking forward to hearing from AmmoGuide's Pageot as Borden Rifles is nearing the completion of a beautiful rifle for him.

As I am no longer able to hunt big game and need help getting out to the range I decided to sell my prototype rifle. I barley got it ready for deer season and the young fellow that bought it grabbed it before I got a picture. He has yet to supply me with one but has kept me up to date on kills. He reported getting a fairly large black bear this spring. The 140 Berger entered the neck and exited leaving an exit wound about the size of a quarter. He said the bear dropped at the shot which was just over 400 yards.

I do have pictures, from a fellow in California, and a report on his 6.5 EXTREME in a Custom Borden Timberline.

Today I confirmed several loads for the 6.5 EXTREME (6.5x300RCM). I'll post them. I took an interest in this cartridge nearly two years ago now when lclund1946 brought my attention to it. Shortly after researching I ordered a rifle from Jim Borden built in this cartridge. It took about 18 months to assemble the gun, dies, etc. Here are a couple pictures:

Here is what Jim has to say about it:
This rifle is built by Borden Rifles using a Borden Timberline Receiver fitted with a Hart #5 taper barrel at 26 inches long. the barrel has a twist rate of 1 in 8 inches to stabilize the bullets that will be used in the wildcat chambering-6.5x300 RCM also known as a 6.5 Extreme. Borden fitted and blended one of his muzzle brakes to the barrel leaving no line where the brake meets the barrel. A Jewell HVRTS trigger was installed, timed and adjusted by Borden. Jim Borden Junior pillar bedded the barreled action to a McMillan Holland Sporter pattern stock. The action is sitting on aluminum pillars and is bedded from the tip of the tang to the recoil lug. The bedding is done stress free so that the rifle can be disassembled and reassembled and maintain it's point of impact. Jim Jr also screwed and glued the Decelerator pad to the stock and then blended the pad to the stock so it looks like part of the stock. The finish done by Borden is a polyurethane epoxy finish and is very durable. The rings are Unitized Rings made by Talley for the Borden actions. They are held to the Borden action by snug fitting 8x40 screws. One of the key advantages to having a Borden action is that it is perpendicular and concentric and the scope block holes are in perfect alignment with the axis of the action so no windage adjustment is needed in rings.

I put a Swarovski Z5 6x25 BRX reticle on it. I've shot 393 rounds through it since April 11th. Not one load has exceeded 1 1/2 inches. Of course, I started out with the knowledge that Laverne provided regarding Retumbo and 140 Bergers. At this point I have four different bullets shooting from the .2's - /3's consistently. And three other bullets I'm still working on that are shooting in the .5's. Here are some photos of the best loads.

I've tried R25 besides Retumbo. It's good. The 140 Sierra GK does better with it so far.

All chronographed loads done with Chrony Beta. All brass trimmed to 2.90 inches. Necks turned to .298. Brass not weighed. Hornady brass is excellent! Seating depths calculated from ogives. 3.467 = touching rifling.

One of the most beneficial aspects of 6.5 EXTREME design is that it is really easy on brass. I have shot 40 rounds of brass now six times. There has been no case expansion, and primer pockets are still tight! 300 RCM Hornady brass is excellent and easily obtained online.

I have a lot to do yet with this gun. It was built as a hunter. But I asked Jim to give me the versatility of shooting in local contests if I wanted to.

I owe a lot of thanks to Laverne (lclund1946) for his patient answers to my many questions, and to Jim Borden as well. It's good to have superstars helping you!!
 
been a while since any additions to the thread. That and I've been away and had my first chance to go shooting since September (away for work)

Those are my good loads so I saved the rest for the long range shooting and leave the 100-200yd stuff for fireforming.


I also got a batch of the JLK 140VLD bullets from Jerry so I'll have to see how they run through the barrel. Did some measuring for OAL plans and because the JLKs start the ogive further back I can seat the bullets waaay out there giving me full case capacity for powder in case I really want to load it up. I can easily break the 3000fps mark but I'm keeping with my current amount for accuracy and barrel length.
