Last summer I did a penetration and expansion bullet test for my .35 Whelen. I shot 4 different type of .35 bullet in wet newspaper and measured the penetration, retain weight and expanded diameter. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90368&highlight=Whelen

I'm planning of doing the same thing for my other favorite caliber, my 6.5X55. I have some 120gr TSX, 130gr TSX, 140gr Hornady SP and 140gr Honady SST. I was thinking it would be nice to have a broader sample of bullets to test and compare but don't want to spend a fortune to buy a box of every bullet out there only to test a few.

Now I know there is a lot of fans of the 6.5X55 and .260 Rem on this board. I was thinking if you 6.5/.260 fans would like me to test your favorite bullet and compare with the others, you could send me a few bullets. I would make a big 6.5 bullet test and post the result with pics on how each bullet compared to each other.

I would supply the the powder, case and primer, all you have to do is send me 5 bullet (I would shoot 3 bullets for representation, 2 spares in case of mishap). You could also send some factory rounds if it's what you use. Anybody interested in collaborating?

I once did some penetration testing on an enormous chunk of ice. I tried every round and caliber I could lay my hands on.
6.5X55 ball ammo out penetrated everything up to .50 bullets. I used many types of ball and FMJ ammo as well as hunting ammo. Of course this is not hunting ammo at all, but it was interesting to see that 6.5x55 outpenetrate the other ball ammo and the big hunting rounds. Heavy .416 Rigbys didn't penetrate as well, nor .458 or .460 and a whole load of smaller hunting rounds. Those long 6.5 bullets are amazing penetrators.

That would be cool Tod. Anybody who's interested in participating can PM me for my mailing address.

So far we'll have:
- 95gr Honady V-max
- 120gr TSX
- 125gr Nosler PT
- 130gr TSX
- 140gr Hornady SP
- 140gr Hornady SST
- 142gr Sierra Matchking
- 155gr Lapua Mega RN

I've got some 140 gr Nosler Partitions and 140 gr Sierra Gamekings I'll send out.
I'm very interested to see the results of this test.
PM inbound.

Please PM me your address if you do not get the hornady 160s, they need to be tested.

I can also send some FMJ.

I would send some of the 156 grain norma alaskan Round nose bullets but I can't bear to part with any of the end of my supply!

If any one has old 156 grain Norma round nose bullets kicking around PM me and we'll make it worth you sending them to me.

There's been much speculation about the possible merits of the Hornady AMAX as a deer hunting bullet. I shoot a lot of these bullets in match rifles, but I'd be really curious to see how they penetrate and hold up.

With that said, I'd be willing to mail you some 140 AMAXes.

PM sent.

so this test is strictly penetration?

What are your variables going to be?

What are you shooting them into?

Take a look at the link on my first post from my .35 bullet test. Penetration, expansion and retain weight. I'll be loading them to duplicate impact velocity at 100 yds from my Winchester FWT 6.5x55 at modern pressure level. I'll be shooting them in wet newspaper.

Updated list

These are the possible candidates so far:

- 95gr Honady V-max
- 120gr Nosler BT
- 120gr TSX
- 125gr Nosler PT
- 125gr Alberta Wildcat
- 129gr Hornady SP
- 130gr TSX
- 140gr Hornady SP
- 140gr Hornady SST
- 140gr Hornady A-max
- 140gr Sierra GameKing
- 142gr Sierra Matchking
- 155gr Lapua Mega RN

Holly S#^t! I wasn't expecting this kind of response! I may have to mug the paper boy and steal his papers!:D

I will be keeping an eye on this one, I have been thinking a .260 rem would be a good first gun for my nephew, 95 gr for hogs and dogs, 140 gr for deer, and 160 gr for moose (under 200 yards).

I anxiously await...

Tell me about it. I don't even want to shoot the box I have.
