Hi there...

Looking for a bolt action, clip and was hoping to learn from you guys, any preferences and if so please share with me:D
Need a rifle for deer and just maybe moose;). sold 30.06 and wish a rifle with a little less kick:redface:, must be getting older...:runaway:

Thanks........ CnoB :sniper:

Lots of good rifles out there. The Savage line has something for just about anyone.Prices aren't bad either .270,280,7x57,25-06...These calibers are mild on recoil as well as others. I have shot a .270 for 35 years and with the proper bullets and load there isn't anything in North American game it won't take down cleanly and quickly. The choice is yours and it is endless.

.270

Thanks:: SaddleTramp

I like savage too, looked at one today but no accu-trigger:mad:, 450 scoped with synthetic stock:confused:, like the wood too much:D, guess I'll keep lookin....:runaway:

.270 kicks about the same as a .30-06 in my mind. If you are going to hunt mostly deer and sometimes moose, how about a 7mm-08???

7mm-08

Thanks Curt

Never fired a 7mm b4, my 30.06 was a Garrand and when I was younger it didn't bother me , but now, I hurt for a couple days after an afternoon with it and my 12 gauge.:D, thought tha a smaller cal. would kick less and kill almost as good:)

Long or Short ???

Well Huntsman that is why I'm here. Need info, not shure the diff. , is it draw back on the bolt to clear the shell?, Go ahead, I can take the heat I think:confused:

Actually a 6.5x55 is darn near perfect. Low recoil and will hold it's own on moose. A nice bolt gun in a Tikka would come to mind for this caliber.

308 has a MUCH less recoil than a 308.

Now I am confused:confused:, do you mean that a 30.06 has less recoil than a 308?? or the other way around...;),
Have back problems, :( and it isn't getting any better with age
Just have to down size the cal. a bit.. :D, maybe even trade 12 gauge for 20gauge:cool:
My loss ....:(. someone else's gain......:D

To answer your question CnoB if you can't handle the recoil of the '06 in a heavy old Garrand than you will not be happy with a .270. Felt recoil of the 270 in a light bolt action will probably be greater than what you are experiencing now. My suggestion would be something like the 6.5x55, .260 Remington, .257 Roberts, or 7mm-08

If you want a .270 Winchester, ask yourself where you want to hunt, and how often you want to shoot it. A .270 in a light rifle may kick as much as a .30-06 in a heavy rifle. A light rifle is perfect to be carried all day up and down and on your shoulder or in your hands. In my mind, light rifles are perfect for hunting. However many people shoot a heavier rifle more accuratly off hand, as the extra weight helps them hold steadier. Also a light rifle can kick you pretty good if you shoot alot off a bench. If you are a stand hunter who doesn't have to walk that far a heavier rifle may be more in your favor. It will soak up more recoil and in truth will be more accurate in the end, as you will probably shoot it better.

Your best bet is to go to a well stocked gunshop and check out as many flavours as possible. If you want a detachable magazine, the Tikka T3 will be a good start for a light rifle, where a Remington 700 SPS DM is a good start for a little heavier rifle. Savage builds several with detatchable magazines that will fit in between these weights. Of course you can get fancier models as well, it depends on how much you want to spend. I think for the 'average' sporting rifle, the Sako model 85 is about as high end as most folks are willing to go that will still get you into a detatchable magazine. Figure on about $1500 for that one. I belive Styer is still around that price as well, so you can work from there. In any rifle you select, consider upgrading your recoil pad to help further reduce recoil on your shoulder and get a scope to match. Long eye relief helps as you have more room to adjust yourself behind the rifle and that can make shooting more comfortable. Good luck. :)
