270 for moose

I hunt Northern Ontario with a savage 250-3000. Yes..............every year..............for MOOSE!! My longest shot was 260 yards and it didnt even twitch. Now that should ruffle some feathers. Our guide will not hunt with anything but the British .303. Savage No4 Mk1 with iron sights. As a matter of fact, throughout his life time of guiding, he has learned to hate the rich folk with their $2000.00 magnum rifles who cant shoot worth a #### and think its all in the gun.

That is a good point Josh, but the flip side is that there are folks with expensive rifles who can shoot, and there are those with working class rifles who cannot. Usually the enthusiast buys the best gear he can afford, takes good care of it, and he is often good at what he chooses to be enthusiastic about. I know more than a few guys, from a variety of backgrounds, who don't know the difference between 125 gr bullet and a 200 gr bullet, and have no understanding of the relationship between the sight, the bullet, and the target and don't maintain their rifles. All I'm saying is that it's poor practice to make assumptions concerning a man's ability based on what he carries.

I posted earlier that a 120 gr .257 caliber bullet that impacts at 2000 fps is suitable for all big game other than buffalo or big bears. Your experience seems to prove the point, providing you were using a bullet that had strong enough construction to penetrate into the vitals from any angle, anything less is to be under-gunned.

The price tag of a rifle has no bearing on the ability of a shooter, but I do find I can hit with much more ease when using my $2000-$3000 rifles than wiht a 303 SMLE...:)

Yes, because only those with $120.00 - 303's and iron sights can shoot. A more expensive rifle in a magnum caliber topped with a Leupold, and you're an idiot who can't shoot.....:runaway:

Yes, very true. However, we've all met that guy who just took up hunting, and has to have the best of the best, and therefore thinks he's a better hunter because of it.

yes, but more common is the guy with a hand me down rifle that thinks he is superior becuase he has little disposable income...;)

I appoligize for coming across that way to you sir. That was not my intention nor belief. Yes, there is no doubt I'm jealous that I do not have a top of the line rifle. I am pointing out a very obvious observation, made by a seasoned guide. Is he generalizing?.....yes, of course. Stereotyping?......Hell ya. However, I use his observations to prove the point that since the dawn of firearm hunting, hunters have been taking game with what now seems to be equipment that is less than adequet. I grew up hunting larger game with the 250-3000 in our family and personaly know that nothing more is required for our regions purposes.

I like the old stuff as much as the new and hunt with both. My No5Mk1 gets as much bush time as the Rem 700 in 300 mag.:)
If you can put the steaks on the table with a 100 year old rifle,I say go for it. This spring I will be using an 8mm Mauser while backing up my son on his first bear hunt, he will be using the Rem 700 in 7x57 I gave him.:sniper:
If buying a $3000 gun makes you more confident and you can shoot it , then go for it.:dancingbanana:

I spent a week hunting this year with my traditional bow, (damn wedding getting in the way of rifle season) and I had no fear of not killing a moose if I saw one. That being said I am not going to rush out and dump my 303 or 308 or 375. If a Moose can be had with a bow it is pretty safe to say a 270 will do it, however when moose hunting two years ago I met a guide who lives in a cabin in the middle of BFNW. He rolled in on a train one night, into the town we had to buy supplies from. I got to talking with him and the longest shot he had seen taken was with a 338 L at 700 yards. 3 shots, all 3 connected = 1 dead moose.
I am sure it sounds like BS but if you met this guy you would probably have a different opinion. He carried a back pack and an old 7mm-08 that was held together with electrical tape:confused:

No need to apologize Josh, I've not been knighted, so the "sir" title is somewhat not needed :). Also there's no need to be jealous of anyone else's firearms either, nor is there a need to pass judgment on a person for their choices. I pass judgment on firearms and calibers, those are my choices and opinions based on my experiences, I don't have a lot of people experience :D I can talk up a storm with a good pack horse though :) You ought to make up your own opinions instead of that of your guide's.

Whatever you choose.. shoot it often and learn to shoot it well.
That being said.. I have used a 270 for the past 35 years.. presently using a 140 gr BTSP hornady with 54.5 grains IMR 4831. If you can shoot really well at long distances.. this rifle will do the job on moose, elk and deer at ranges that will scare you.. I have downed a moose at 420 yards.. took three but it was down all the same, (he was dead but didn't know it on the first one, so I hit him 2 more times in the same fist sized spot). Several moose in the 300 yard range.. and shot them at 40 ft as well.. same effect.. you hit them in the boiler room.. they will most certainly die.
Biggest plus for me is it doesnt beat the crap outta me when I pull the trigger. I do my job, she does hers..

270 is a great moose gun for short distances and bush cover. However u will need a bigger cal if shooting over 150yrds

Man if I would of had a bigger gun a few years ago I would have bagged me a moose because he was 160 yards away and i was afraid of not killing him!!:D
