270 for moose

270 is a great moose gun for short distances and bush cover. However u will need a bigger cal if shooting over 150yrds

Whoa....three posts since Mar. 2004 and this has to be one of them  Yup, the .270 is definitely "the choice" for bush cover. I think you're pulling our legs. :)

Me Too

Having killed many deer with a .270 Win, but never gone moose hunting before, I was wondering the same thing.

I'm finally going for moose this year and I plan to take my .270 using Hornady 130gr or 140gr SSTs (working the loads now - whatever shoots best).

Yes, I will be shooting the smallest round in camp, but frankly most of them can't shoot a minute of moose from a bench with there 30-06s, 7mms, super-duper magnums, etc.

I'm no expert, but my personal belief is that the rifle you can shoot the best is the one you should use. Since I am very comfortable with my .270 Win, it is my rifle of choice for the moose trip.

Good luck and shoot straight!

IMO ...... I would think a 150 or 160gr Nosler Partition or Barnes 150gr TSX would be better bullets for heavy game.

You don't need that heavy , SC, I've been there:D I would use a 140 Accubond or 130 TSX instead. In the long run put an ugly hole i hs lungs and eat some moose steaks. The 150 PArtition and 58gr of H4831sc is a great load for everything IMO. I'd leave the 160gr PArtitions alone, myself.

I never have and never will take anyone moose hunting with a .243, .270 or anything smaller than a 30-06. Not in 40 years,

so far I've seen approx 20 moose fall to .270's, .308s, 7-08's, .25-06....

all took one shot. the same about of shots needed from the ones I've watched drop from .338's, .300mags, 7mm mags, shortmags.....

maybe your buddies need some practice?

my last moose was shot at 150yrds with a .270 win using ANCIENT imperial ammo. bang...flop.

160gr RN @ 2350 fps MV.

guess it thought it was a .30-06 or larger ;)

I wouldn't use the SST's.. more of a deer pill... thinner wall they say they don't penetrate as well.. I have never tried it on moose...just what I have been told. Passing it along..

I dont' think that they would perform all that poorly, that being said I havent tried one on a heavy animal like a moose.

These guys tested the SST on hawgs...

It sounds like enough of you guys have taken your moose with the 270 that I am now confident to use mine.If you can kill with old IMPERAL ammo then I would assume that todays bullets would be that much better. My friends dad uses cheap, Winchester, round nose soft point ammo. From what I have learned from this is, practice shot placement. Many thanks for the good advice and the laughs I have gotten from some of you. Agree or disagree, its nice to know that we all have a love of the sport.

make sure mister moose has no idea you're there.

put bullet A into heart/lungs B

watch it tip over

don't see how people make shooting moose so complicated. the only real trick to hunting them is finding them. after that it's pretty simple. just a big deer.
