270 on a budget

I picked up a 270 Vanguard 1 DBM at Wholesale for $400 last spring. Added a VX 1 Leopold 3-9 40mm for $200 on sale. After polishing up the trigger it is a top notch deer rifle for $600 plus tax.

I'm leaning towards the axis or 111 hunter xp. I dont know much about the 4x4 and atr100 but i do have a mossberg 535 shotgun and love, mossberg makes a good product. Ive been calling around to see if i can even find the 4x4 or atr100 in the area(kingston, Ontario) and nobody has one.

The 4x4 is a very nice rifle for the price point. Way more features than others in the same price range, and even more features than some of the more pricey rifles. If you can manage to track one down locally it would be worth a good look over and handling. I love mine, and have had no issues so far. That being said though, I've only had it for one season. Good luck.

I believe that s&w is different, it's an i bolt. The howa made s&w are marked as the s&w 1500 model. If I'm wrong somebody please let me know on this one, because then I'll buy it!

I would go with the 111, more parts available for the 10/110 actions. Spend a few extra bucks and get a 111 international trophy hunter xp, comes with accu trigger and a better weaver scope with the ballistic plex reticle, base 111 does not have the accu trigger and comes with a bushnell. The little bit extra $ is well worth it. wholesale sports has them for $499

My vote would go to a Ruger American rifle in .270.....Ive tried out alot of entry level rifles, and the Ruger is the best in price class IMHO. It does'nt come with a $40 garbage scope, like a entry level savage, mossberg, or remington, but if you spend $400 on a ruger, you then buy a bushnell banner, or tasco scope, and your total price is around $500...if you can afford a little more, then buy a bushnell trophy.

Your best bet, to save money though, is buying a used remington model 700sps or another rifle of similiar quality....but in all honesty, a ruger american is a step above a model 700sps, and is actually on par with a tikka t3 lite IMHO. I own a tikka t3 lite, and my ruger american is just as accurate, softer recoiling because the better pad, same light weight, and seems built just as good, or better. The beefy bolt on a ruger is impressive, and the only part of the rifle that seems entry level, is the plastic stock. The stock is functional, and does not flex or bend like a cheap savage axis, but it isnt pretty, but then again, in order to produce a $400 rifle that shoots MOA, ruger had to cut costs somewere, but even though the stock isnt pretty, it is on par with a tikka stock....only it costs alot less.

i agree with the above post to a degree, a Rem700 sps is a great option, a 2nd hand model700 is a good option aswell.

I disagree the American is a better rifle than the SPS simply because of the accuracy and the Model 700 action itself.

I'm currently in the market for an entry level 270 (scope included)for coyote and deer hunting. However like most people I'm on a tight budget.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Don't know if this is filled yet ......usually some decent deals on used in the EE ; the Ruger tang safety's show up occasionally pretty reasonably priced, sometimes the older (better) Remington 700's or (as mentioned) the Parker Hale 1200 and/or 1100. New ....hard to beat that Savage 111C package

.. Don't limit yourself to buying a "Package deal". That being said, if it were me, I'd be looking for Ruger 77 ( Maybe with the Tang Safety ) and then looking for a Scope. Consider also, that a 243 MIGHT be a viable alternative Caliber. Although the 243 seldom seems to come up on the used market. ...... David K

My $0.02 is a Vanguard S1 if you can find one or an S2. I got an S1 sporter on sale last year and love it. Will be getting an S2 for an elk gun here as well. Maybe even and S2 in 223 for coyotes. Fantastic rifles.
