.270 or .243?

A .270 was my first rifle, and is plenty of gun for most occasions. Easy to get ammo, reloading components, lots of choice when your shopping for a new gun. The only advice i can give is have your kid actually handle the rifle and see whats closest to the right lenght of pull, comfortable weight, ext.. Nothing wrong with a 243, and i've seen it drop some pretty big mule deer and elk. So the idea (above) that its not enough gun for a whitetail...........? give your head a shake..

easy choice, 270.

A lot more versatile for hunting, load up from 100 gr. to 160 (I think someone actually makes a 180 grain bullet)

From Groundhogs to Moose, all you have to (with the right loading) do is point the rifle in the right direction (to put it simply). Ive heard of guys hunting Moose with a .243 and of course they were telling me how great it was but I prefer (and most of us) a heavier bullet for bigger critters.

As for your son shooting it, the 270 is fine. get him started on some lighter 130 gr. loads if he's a little recoil shy.

.308 , with mild loads , pretty much anyone can shoot it, and with top end loads there isn't much on this continent that you couldn't drop.Ammo available anywhere, and a great selection of bullet designs and weights.Short action, so it can be had in more compact rifles.

Pathfinder,
If I ever end up Moose or Bear hunting it will likely be in your neck of the woods. My wife has an uncle that lives in Timmins, Conrad Courchesne (Con's Electric) if you know him. He keeps inviting my son and I up and I just might have to take him up on it this year.
