A .270 was my first rifle, and is plenty of gun for most occasions. Easy to get ammo, reloading components, lots of choice when your shopping for a new gun. The only advice i can give is have your kid actually handle the rifle and see whats closest to the right lenght of pull, comfortable weight, ext.. Nothing wrong with a 243, and i've seen it drop some pretty big mule deer and elk. So the idea (above) that its not enough gun for a whitetail...........? give your head a shake..
