looking at a new dedicated hunting rifle. Uses will be Deer, Bear and Elk.

Witch round do you think I should go with ? the .270 or 30-06 ?

Im thinking the 30-06 will be the winner. just wondering what you guys think.

pros and cons of each ?

Townsend Whelen said it best. "The 30-06 is never a mistake"!.

Even the late Jack O'Connor admitted the 280 is better than a 270... so make youre choice.

Bullet diameter seems to make a difference.

30/06 just because I love it and have shot a lot of game with a few different rifles and you can always count on results when you do your job. I am not bashing the .270 in any way. It is a very capable cartridge as well, but you mentioned bear and elk and that pushes me towards my favorite for reasons of bullet weight and a bit of extra diameter. Either will do the job for sure, just my 2 pennies.

Much the same of the same muchness. Both excellent rounds that have taken uncountable deer, elk and bear.

I favor the 30/06 for all around. The .270 Winchester is better at longer ranges I believe. The .243 Winchester is also an excellent calibre. I am lucky enough to own all three.

.30-06 has more bullet choices than .270.

Take the easy route like I did and eliminate the indecision of forced choice. Get one of each.

If you want your bolt to feel like a potato masher, go with a long action:

Look at that bolt, it's like a water pump. Cycling that thing with your massive 3-4 round magazine is going to feel like grating cheese. 308 is a way better choice than 270, and if you want the power of 30.06 over other 30cal, why not just get a 300win mag.

Seriously look at the pictures of the post above, is there any room at all to move that scope back or forth? Your gun will be heavier, have less mag cap, and less scope position options. About the only thing a long action is good for is magnum rounds. In 270 you're just punishing yourself, it has nothing on 308 whatsoever except crappier bullet selection.

30-06 Savage rifle; cheap, accurate; good ammo selection on cheap too. It'll take moose and griz. And will leave your shoulder hurting after you finish sighting it in.

30-06 is pretty much a magnum round in real world.

If you want something pretty and that you wanna enjoy for rest of your life, go with Sako.

I used to think it mattered between those two choices, in the real world it doesn't. I have shot both extensively, also shot and killed enough animals with both to know that it doesn't.

Pick a good bullet and put it where it counts and animals die, period.

The only reason I shoot the .270 is because I live in a part of Ontario with calibre restrictions. Otherwise I'd own a .30-06. But I have no complaints with the .270 and don't feel all that hard done by. Both are great cartridges.
