.270 stopping power

Short of going into brush after a grizzly, I can't think of hunting in Canada the .270 Win isn't suited for. (OK, grouse hunting is out, but...)

It wouldn't be my first choice for grizz,elk, or moose. But I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any of those with a .270. If I was a all over the province Ontario hunter, (which I am), and had no money to buy a new rifle for a grizz trip. I wouldn't feel nervous about toting a .270. In fact, out to 200 metres, like you said in your post. I wouldn't feel undergunned carrying my 6.5x55. With my own hand loads of course. Just mt 2 cents.

Bullet in .277 caliber are made up to and including 180 grs. A 180 gr bullet at 2700 fps has enough momentum to shoot broadside through any North American game and can be counted on to give 12"-18" of penetration on the length provided no heavy supporting bone is hit. Should a heavy supporting bone be hit, you can be assured that iot will no longer support the animal allowing for a rapid follow up shot. Jack O'Conner was of the opinion that the 130 gr bullet was suitable for any game up to the size of a moose, and he pretty much considered the 130 a general purpose projectile. With the advent of the long Barnes TSX/TTSX bullets this is more true today than ever before. I would always choose a .30/06 over a .270, but this is simply a personal prejudice.

The person I bought my .270 from had it set up for coyote and took many with it. I haven't tried coyote yet but it's a tack driver. Shilen heavy barrel and Timney trigger. Love this thing...

I've taken a fair bit of game with the 270, including Elk & Moose.
The longest shot I ever took at an animal was taken [successfully] with the 270.
I have never felt handicapped in any way packing the 270.
Choose your projectile, pick your shot, and enjoy your steaks, etc.

Hard to say. Keith was quite capable of writeing things to get a reaction. Interestingly, since he had said just about everything at least once he is quoted frequently to prove vastly varying positions. How else could he be promoted as the patron saint of the 45/70 crowd, while he also claimed that the .300 Mags were the best allround NA cartridge? Why do people use his writeing to show that big and slow are magical, when he spent much of his life makeing big bullets go faster?:confused:
