Hello guys first post on this forum, been on Alberta outdoorsman for a while and heard this is another great forum so hello and nice to meet ya. I currently only own a 7-08 weatherby. bought it at a screaming deal for myself and wife to shoot till i could afford a gun formself and she can have the 08. my whole family owns and love the browning bolt in 270. i also love the bolt but i have been tempted to go the 28 nobler route rather than the 270. i get a lot of mixed opinions when i out this out so i was curious what you all thought. im looking for a gun i can hunt everything with. that isn't a 7mm remington magnum. (shot one for a few years and developed a flinch) should i stick with a 270 . or is there merit to going the 280 route? thanks for your thoughts.

I wouldn't go 28 nosler (unbraked) if you flinched with a 7mm RM. Nothing wrong with a 270 but if you want a do it all rifle, and slightly different, than a 280 ackley improved is a great choice. There are factory loads available for it, or do you reload?

Definitely skip .28 Nosler. Ridiculous and pointless and over priced and rare. No worth your time.
You usually can't find .280 Remington ammunition on shelves, unless its a very well stocked establishment. If you forget your ammo on a hunt, you might be hooped.
Factory .270 ammunition is rather anemic, and gives up a lot vs. good .280 ammo, but you can buy it from anyone that sells ammo.
If you reload, the .280 is the only choice, and the best of them all.

If the 7mm rem mag has too much recoil then a 270 win would be a good choice. Has enough power for most game and shoots flat enough as well. A 280 would also be a good choice. Both these cartridges are close ballistically.
i will be reloading as well so not worried about the availability of ammunition. in terms of recoil i will have break on it, and i always wear hearing protection. i also shoot on private land and have my "range" setup there. recoil of 280 without break is significant? compared to 270? i know load will change this just curious. what people actual experiences are. thanks

No, there is no difference in recoil between a 270 win and a 280 remington using bullets of the same weight.
Realistically, there is very little difference between a 270win and a 280rem. Bullet diameter changes by 0.007 inches. Case capacity is basically the same, so recoil with the same weight bullet and gun will also be the same.
The big difference is that the 280 allows you to use 175gr+ bullets, but the heavier you go the lower your velocity so I probably wouldn't go above a 160gr pill anyways... Technically the 280has more bullet options, but there isn't anything a 280 will kill that a 270 won't.
Finding factory ammo (which can come into play if you forget your ammo, ask me how I know...) for a 270 is much easier though.

i guess my next question would be.
what should i get? the 7-08 is quite similar to 270 from what i read. im looking for hunting. something that will do more than my -08. or at least be different so i can justify having two guns. thoughts? again i hunt prairies, dropped two white tail bucks over 300 yards this year. wife first was 190 yards. the terrain dictates longer shots than i did while hunting bc.
took a moose last year with 7-08 as well.

can you elaborate? i hear a lot of people hating breaks, I've heard they damage scopes and are loud. i have also heard new optics can handle them no problem. and i always have hearing protection on. is there something else I'm missing?
