The manufacturers of ammo and of bullets are the only ones that make the 280 better than the 270. If the bullet selection for .277 slugs was as good as that of the .284 it would indeed be hard to see the difference. P.S. Anyone that thinks a 308 and 30-06 are the same/same needs to do more home work.

for all practical purposes the 308 and the 30-06 are the same beast. when you start loading 180 gr.+ bullets the 30-06 has an edge due to its longer length aka powder capacity, but even this edge is only an advantage at ranges further than 90% of animals are shot. my way of thinking is if whatever you're shooting needs more gun than a 165 gr. bullet in either cartridge, I want a 338 or bigger

This statement is true in intent but a little misleading... it is true there are a more "component" bullet types and numbers available in .284 for reloading than in .277... but if you look at the range of bullet weights available for both, the .270 has from 90 grain to 180 grain bullets and you can get from 100 grain to 175 grain for a .284.

actually Barnes no longer makes the 180 gr. Original round nosed soft point in .277", just like they no longer make the 195 gr. Original spitzer in .284"...
so the range of bullets is 90-160 gr. in 270 and 100-175 gr. in 280. Only Nosler makes a 160 gr. bullet too in 270, but Sierra, Speer, Swift, Nosler, Barnes, and Hornady all make 175 gr. 7mm bullets for reloading.

Hawk makes 80gr and 165gr. bullets in .277 caliber, I am dissapointed in you Tod, this is your favourite manufacturer of premium bullets, how could you miss this?
SmithRite bullets make a 190gr Round Tip in 7mm
So, unless someone else comes up with something new....
.277 - 80gr. to 165 gr for a range of 85grs
.284 - 100gr to 190gr for a range of 90grs
Which is funny, because the .280 is slightly better, therefore should have slightly more options for reloading!

We live in a time of fantastic bulets, and althbough I applaud the small companies, a Barnes or Nosler really solves all our problems. They are accurate, and very deadly.
Whn you see a X bullet from a 7mm plow through both shoulders of a grizz, or see a Nosler make a black bear drop so fast you thought you had missed, or see a moose drop as if it was shot point blank in the head...Well, what is the point of going elsewhere? :shock: :wink:

Oh Gee ... I dunno... maye if Remington could decide on a name for some of their cartridges I woudn't be so confused... 7mm Express/280 Rem... .244Rem/6mm They change the names of their cartridges more than my old lady changes her hair color :roll:

now if someone can post some extensive range and field testing, unbiased, using a range of factory rifles in each caliber, shooting factory ammo and handloads of similar design, maybe we could then lay this topic to rest...

This is a great Idea... Chilly would be happy to provide his Remington 700 in .270 :wink: ...is there anyone in the Peterborough Area with a Rem 700 or similar rifle chambered in .280 willing to take part in a "definitive test" :?: ... I will provide all the powder, bullets, reloading equipment, Chronograph.... and the reloading bench and the range are only a 150 feet apart... we could do this in a day... who knows how to make ballistic gellatin :wink:
