270 vs 30-06

This reminds me of the RAT HUNTING thread started by young Robert McCafferty back about three years ago, I think it went to a couple dozen pages. I am not certain that anyone advocated either of the metric or the imperial cartridges for them. But maybe they did. Anybody remember?

Doug

First off, congratulations to Doug for getting this over to the eighth page. I believe that I would give up hunting if I actually owned both of those cals and had to choose. I suppose that I'd just take both.

WRT PMPM, I really like the 7.62x63mm as a hunting rifle, although the 11.63x63 is a close second. Since I do almost all of my hunting in northern Ontario, the use of a 6.86x65mm isn't necessary. Recently, in addition to my 6.5x55mm I've loaded up some heavier bullets (31.4 g) for my 6.17x52mm. Wicked!

HA! - yeah, at baiting us into post whoring. I guess that makes you a master... er... a really good baiter.

LMFAO!!

Slugging my way through this damn thread just made me late for work, but that last post really made it worthwhile!

I just hope Gate washes his hands after 'baiting, cause we're eating his cooking tommorrow!

Now why would he do that? It's his secret sauce, kinda like KFC has special herbs and spices

Ah Stevo ol buddy, WRT your LFPMPM and your twisted affliction to this metric stuff how does that 31.4 gram (wassat bout 600 grains) "heavier" bullet shoot out of your 6.17X52? Do you use this for concrete testing

No, I use it only for deers. It's about 100 grains.

I never bought a 6.17 for deer. That 's what the 6.5x55, 7.62x51mm, 7.7x53 and 7.62x54 are designed to take. Nonetheless, it never hurts to be prepared!!

Hmm. I thought there were 28 grams in an ounce which is 500 and some grains :?
......................
Just checked its actually about 15 grains to the gram so we're both wrong....

Oh my goodness! That should have been 6.5 grams not 31.4! But that's okay. I forgive you. Don't make that mistake again!!

Getting back to the subject, 2 hunters in my groupe use the calibers in question and I have shot both. If I ever had to make a call, regarding deer hunting, it would depend on the terrain in question. Farmland = 270 / woodland = 30-06.
But that's only my humble opinion

Frightening to even think about it. But you know - that's the risk you take when you step out of our safe city and into the wild world.
Foxer, that is exactly what ticks me off about the "never leave the city" people. They take the kids to the park and point out the cute little squirels. They are so ignorant to accept the fact that there are viscious vermin out there that can be so unpredictable. Maybe they should take junior out for a walk and find out that feeding them isnt maybe such a good idea afterall, especially when a childs life is involved. Is it true that the Northern squirrel is more savage than the Southern squirrel. I wonder what would happen if someone were to somehow capture one of these killer beasts, what would happen if they were to cross breed with a domestic city squirrel. Wait a minute, that may mean another calibre will have to be intruduced.

So...you bag a bull moose with a .30-06 and it has a 60" wide rack, cool 8) . Now should you drop a bull with a 7.62mm does it have a 150cm wide rack? :? ...KF (hey, 338 posts and I shoot a .338...coincidence?)

Is it true that the Northern squirrel is more savage than the Southern squirrel.

No, that's a bit of a myth. THe fact is food is more plentiful in the south, so the squirrels there are less likely to feel the need to prey on humans.

Plus they had the 'squirrel smart' program going down here for some time.

The fact is that in hard years where the nut supply isn't what it should be, a southern squirrel will turn on you as fast as it's northern cousin.

Wait a minute, that may mean another calibre will have to be intruduced.

Remminton's already working on it: The super short ultra wide maga velocity nut buster. Basically, it's a 22 lr necked down to .17, and then necked back up again to 22. they expect sales of this new rifle to take off once the gun writers rave about it's performance. They claim it can still chamber the older 22 lr as well, but we'll see.
KF (hey, 338 posts and I shoot a .338...coincidence?)

The topic really doesn't have anything to do with a rifle or cartridge. :D

I love my 30/06. It's an almost unnatural or unholy love...at least compared to a 270. But all things considered, I'll still blow the doors off of all of you with my 303.

Only prostitutes and hockey players use a 270...

I thought the 270 is the bastard son of the 30-06???

And for all you arguing about squirrles. North south dont matter. The most vicious is the Red squirrle hands down. And it dont care where it is!

Deffinately need to step up to the 30-06 fort them
