270 vs 30-06

After eight pages, if I had to pick between the two, I'd still take my 30-30.

Actually the 30-30 is not bad squirrel medicine at all. With the flat heavier bullets they strike a little harder than the numbers might indicate. And, cmmon, thousands of those that have gone before us have killed truck loads of bigger critters with the thuda-thuda 8) I'd prefer a little more gun but I certainly wouldn't dismiss the 30-30.

I don't think the 30-30 is anything to sneeze at - i think it's problem is effective range more than hitting power. And even 'problem' is too strong a word, more like 'disadvantage compared to some more modern cartridges'.

but what about the RATS??????

Heck we can hit ten pages easy with this one. Maybe twenty.

Anybody know how the Gunnutz Lone Butte Invasion turned out? I could not go because of family holidays........ :(

Rats...Squirrels.....270's or the '06 can take them....But when it comes to the Manitoban brain sucking, skin eating Zombies you need the manly 280Rem.

Russ...

oh, but it IS slowing down a bit.

BTW I am reminded that the agnostic dyslexic proclaims that there is no dog.

I was thinking that the heavier bullets fo rthe 30-06 may make it more versatile, but with the higher SD of the .270 bullets, there may be very little difference in killing power... :D

That was just a cover story. The real issue was that he couldn't decide which caliber was more effective for dog. He spent many a Sunday in Church pondering over that dilemna...

This thread needs more bonechilling tales of close encounters with the dreaded "Bull Squirrels" or BS for short  Salty, how's that .458 Squirrelzilla coming along?
Gatehouse, do you think that a .30-06 with a custom long throat and loaded with 250gr RNSP bullets would have the penetration required for a squirrel stopper? Or would you lean towards the Roy Weatherby theory of a well constructed but lightweight hyper-velocity bullet to cause maximum carnage?
So who was right, Elmer or Jack? ...the saga continues...

I OWN A 30-06 AND SEVERAL OTHERS BUT i LOOKED AT 270'S AND THE 06 DOES IT ALL SO THATS THE ONE i CHOSE

Why are you yelling?

O'Connor felt the .270 was more inherently accurate than the .30-06.

I was thinking of getting a new HUNTING rifle. I've narrowed downt he choices to .270 or 30-06.
After having hunted with both, the 06 wins the hammer award.
The .270 I would consider the sports car of the 2.
Both are excellent, some may claim the .270 is more accurate, given equal specs on both firearms maybe so.
If it was my choice it would be the 06, easy to load , great bullet choices, and more frontal mass for the bigger game animals.
