270 vs 30-06

THANX. I read through the whole 11 pages now I have to go to my therapist. It took me 17 years to get over it. OH THE HUMANITY! The nightmares have started again and the screaming, OH MY GOD THE SCREAMING! Those black bastards came at us from all directions. There was nothing we could do, it was carnage. I lost many friends that fall, too many. The Horror...the horror.

Thirty two of us. There was thirty two...all armed with FN A1C1 7.62mm. It was warm that year and the frogs were chirping feverously. There we stood on the black ashpalt of the parade square CMR, high noon, but at least we had the comfort of the shade trees...oh the trees. What was our blessing of shade after hours of just standing there in the noon day sun, soon became our undoing. Friends were wavering and falling from the heat, then it happened. Those bloody black bastards came down from the trees, scores of them, looking for nutz....US. WE opened up but to no-avail, most of the GREEN-horns had never fired a shot. THey took us, horribly. Those recruit eating black quebec squirrels! The bastards. We never had a chance. THree of my comerades fell before October. Eight more in November. Six in December and Ten more in the Spring and Summer. What the squirrles did was unimaginable. But it was nothing compared to the frogs. The squirrels were indiscriminate..... but the frogs. The frogs loved the salt. They went after the Atlanticans with viciousness..there was no mercy. Oh the FROOOOGGGSS! I gotta go. Its too much to remember! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

In BC most of the rare hunting opportunities seem to come from escaped animals from ranches, although I'd love to hear I'm mistaken in that...

Rare indeed, but it has a way of growing into the common. Turkey is 'open season' this year, not special tag or draw needed. European rabbit is a year round hunt now. Sometimes an escaped population 'catches'.

Wait...custom Remington 710? There's something about that that just doesn't sound right...

Maybe he had a 710 laying around and had a smith make a gun out of it. (some how). :)

O'Connor felt the .270 was more inherently accurate than the .30-06.

Hmm, so you mean I might get MOA out of a good .30-06 and maybe .9 MOA out of a good .270 or something like that arguement?

I fail to see how that should impact a decision to buy either in any meaningful way. The deer will not see the difference IMHO.

At 100meters maybe, but by 1000meters you could be 10-12 inches off. Maybe that works for you, but I need EVERY shot to be a responsable shot, and 1.5 feet off at 1400m could mean the diff between a gut shot and one in the boiler room.

270, hands down. (subject to change, of course)

If you know your rifle, the balistics of the round your shooting and the limitations of all, including your shooting skills, this becomes a poor arguement

Oh sure, poopoo my hunting skills why don't y'all. What's next, a "no headshots on running game beyond 900m" safety brigade commercial?

Cdngunner, If I could tell you about the times I had to feed my whole Delta Force team using nothing but the 270, you'd know I have a great argument.

(there are unfortunately reasons I can't tell any Delta Force stories, uh well, one main reason, really).

Foxer, PEI started it, I'm the victim here.

I had frogs running across the road in front of my car last night. I remember thinking "thank god I'm safe in this steel box", but after reading the earlier post I don't know. I think they were probably just toying with me, playing with their food before they get around to actually eating it.

I'm terrified that tonight will be the night. What do they have planned for me? Are they going to strip me naked and make nasty frog love with me first??

Thankfully I don't own a 270 OR a 30-06, so I won't have the shame of having on my tombstone:

"Here lies a froggy love toy, he'd still be with us today if he didn't rely on a girly-gun"

Maybe he had a 710 laying around and had a smith make a gun out of it. (some how).
Is that even POSSIBLE  ?
Oh yeah a .30-06 is sure "girly", even though an AP .30-06 round can pierce through 7 inches of concrete  . Now it may not be enough to drop a bison in it's tracks at 1400m ( ), but it sure ain't "girly"!

All you have to do is replace the receiver, bolt, trigger group, barrel and stock and the Rem 710 makes a great rifle!

You CAN'T replace the barrel. :D

You know, I think your best bet would be to jump onto a deer out of a tree and club it to death, rather than try to shoot it with the 710  .
