.270 vs Moose?

270 will work fine on moose. So will a 308. All that is needed is a decent bullet and good shot placement.

I wonder if your deer experience with the 308 is because you are using a moose bullet on a deer?

Moose are not difficult to kill. My grandfather shot 2 each year for over 50 years with a 30-30 rifle. (One for the family and one for the local orphanage). Only one moose needed a second shot. He shot them in the head.

I second the suggestion of trying a 130 and 150 partition and seeing which groups best. And I snuggest you do the same with a 150 and a 165 in your 308.

I'm only an off tune voice lost in the choir but .270 is a perfect moose cartridge. Ted /Why Not? here who has guided and seen more moose shot than just about anyone on the forum has said he's seen more dead right there moose shots with .270 than any other chambering. It's very light recoil, high speed, and flat trajectory. Those add up to deadly bullets going to the right place. .308 and .270 are perfect moose medicine, with the edge going to .270. And I'll echo the comments that if you're seeing inconsistent results with the .308 that's an operator issue.

when i say 'Mixed results" with 308. My shot placement is there right where it should be, but I never seem to get good penetration, and give the animals quick deaths. With a typical heartxlung shot at ~200M.
I usually shoot this stuff.

Most of the guys I hunt with all shoot magnums and the deer usually drop dead on the spot.

I'm not surprised by the slow killing; real world impact velocities at that range are lucky to be in the 22s, and with a bullet that's a lead smear away from being a mono and a lightly constructed animal that means the show's been over for awhile. Barely got started in fact.

Now if you had to win a bet, and perforate a close range bison, or maybe just a moose through the shoulders with your .308 then Bob's your brother-in-law.;)

Its a good example of misapplication. Obviously you're trying, making good hits and paying top dollar for your ammo. You'd be better off with blue box 150s which are probably the cheapest thing on the shelf.
