270 win for moose

My .270 Win is my go-to for almost everything from Coyotes to calf Moose. Ontario adult Moose can get to almost 1100lbs and a .270 is a tad light at ranges over 150m which isn't at all uncommon on Hydro cuts and across swamps. In that case, the .308 and .30-06 rule supreme to ensure a quick, ethical harvest.

New Brunswick moose can go over 1000 lbs. as well. Anything a .308 or .30/06 can kill will die just as quick if shot with a proper .270 load in my experience.

270 is great for moose, use good bullets and it will be even better, a friend in the NT had one, it was his favorite despite having a 300weatherby and a 338 win mag. There's big moose up there, they all fell.

Taking a .270 this fall for moose.
150gr Federal Fusion is my preferred whitetail round, but may see if I can find some Partitions or Trophy Bonded for a little tougher bullet..

I worked for an outfitter in the early 80s and he used 130 grainers exclusively and I used an 06 with 165 grains and they were all dead...... no difference. We weren't too bad at shot placement.

All of my moose have been taken with archery gear, but one of my partners has taken more than 50 moose with his .270 using 130 grain Partitions.

I took my northern Alberta bull moose at 180yrs with my .270. Using 130gr Barnes TSX. Took 2 shots, that was because after the 1st round he stayed stood for about a 30sec, never moved, so i popped another round. After the second round we saw steam come out from the other side of him, he hobbled about 10yrds and dropped. After dressing him, we recovered 1 of the rounds that just broke the hide but never made it out. The other round was though and though. Both shots were about 3 inches apart through both lungs, the exit lung was non existent as 80% of it was turned to mush.

It will kill the moose dead, best to use a heavy for caliber bullet with a strong construction. Like a 150/160g partition, Barnes TTSX, 150 A Frame, or a bonded bullet. 270’s are pretty fast and with a light bullet and construction it can lack penitration with a moose.

^^ This ^^ ...... Don't expect moose to drop at the shot esp with a typical lung shot and no matter what you shoot them with. I've shot a couple with a 375magnum and neither reacted to the shot right away. Both just stood there until they realized they were dead.

It has been 19 years since I have been drawn for a tag. I think I'll leave the bow at home. But to get even one with a bow is commendable.

I shot a cow moose through the lungs with a 444 marlin, and it still went 75 yards.
For this season I want to put 3 guns together that will all reach out to 250 yds without compensating for bullet drop, so that is the reasoning for one of them being the 270. You probably recognize the gun :)
