I have several .270's, a couple .280's, and a few 30-06's, as well as others, both larger and smaller. When I go out for deer I'm in the very open country. No trees for miles. I tend to grab one of the .270's most often. Then one of the .280's next often. Then one of my 6.5 caliber's. I don't tend to grab a 30-06 very often when going for deer, although it has happened a couple times over the past few years.
When I go for bigger critters like Elk, I tend to grab one of my 30 cal magnums. Either one of the 308 Norma's or the 300WSM. But, I have carried a 30-06 when looking for elk... I just prefer the longer reach of the magnum.
I just don't tend to carry the 30-06 very often when I go out hunting. It is so versatile that it is great for a one-gun battery, but when I go out I tend to choose something more specialized.
Oh, and I don't own a 308win, and have no desire to either. And yes... I have used one when hunting. I killed a mule deer buck with one shot. So it is capable, but I just have no desire to own one.
