270 winchester vs 30-06 springfield

Chuck agrees with O'Connor: get both.

I think
.22lr,
.223 rem 52-70 grain
.270 win 110-160 grain
.375 h&h 270-300 grain

Makes a nice set of cartridges to cover everything.

I have several .270's, a couple .280's, and a few 30-06's, as well as others, both larger and smaller. When I go out for deer I'm in the very open country. No trees for miles. I tend to grab one of the .270's most often. Then one of the .280's next often. Then one of my 6.5 caliber's. I don't tend to grab a 30-06 very often when going for deer, although it has happened a couple times over the past few years.

When I go for bigger critters like Elk, I tend to grab one of my 30 cal magnums. Either one of the 308 Norma's or the 300WSM. But, I have carried a 30-06 when looking for elk... I just prefer the longer reach of the magnum.

I just don't tend to carry the 30-06 very often when I go out hunting. It is so versatile that it is great for a one-gun battery, but when I go out I tend to choose something more specialized.

Oh, and I don't own a 308win, and have no desire to either. And yes... I have used one when hunting. I killed a mule deer buck with one shot. So it is capable, but I just have no desire to own one.

This. I own a beater 30-06 for the sole purpose of hunting with on sh!tty days where i don't want my "good guns" full of snow or rain, or it comes along to camp as a spare. I have enough rifles I tend to carry something more specialized for the type of hunting I'm doing. If i could own just one centerfire for north america it would be an '06, but there are so many others out there that aren't as boring! lol

wow checked up on this thread again... still going, crazy! I plan on owning 1 rifle for all my purposes, i keep hearing the shot placement argument but as a new hunter i'd like a bit of over power maybe... i'll get the 30-06 and see where that takes me. If I need something else, i'll take chucks advice. thanks everyone!

No. It wasn't still going. The last posting was three weeks ago! But you really missed it, didn't you? Common, don't be shy! Laugh2

I look forward to reading this whole thread on a Rainy day!

I just recently shot my biggest Sambar stag, 29" and 300kg with a .270, i normally use the 35 Whelen (35-06) So it was such a joy to knock him over with my Favourite BG rifle, Remington 700 .270!

Cheers

PS- to the OP, a 30-06 you wont go wrong, little bit more flex for shot placement, wack em an stack em

To solve this dillema, I propose we all go out with both the 270 & 30-06 and shoot several hundred rounds of each at varying distances.

If that doesnt help, shoot some more! Lol! IT DOESNT MATTER!

They are BOTH great!!! I Own both, and shoot both. My choice is hindged more on my mood than ANYTHING ELSE. Have fun with what you got/want.
