270 winchester vs 30-06 springfield

Every rifle cartridge developed in the last 100+ years has been trying to reproduce the versatility and success of the .30-06. Go with the '06.

I was sure someone would show up with the .308! These debates might get old for the rest of you but I love seeing them as I've just decided I'm going to spring for a new Winchester m70 Supergrade and still trying to decide on a .308 or 30-06 as one goto rifle for deer, moose, caribou as I get into hunting. Gotta get me one befor manufacturing moves to Portugal.

I don't plan on another for a while but do like the idea of a 6.5x55 eventually as well.

For now, it's gonna have to be a .308 or 30-06!

I have a FN TSR 300 WSM for those heavy one, but you would be surprised, in my 308 Nemesis i am pushing a 208 Amax with R17 at 2600 fps +... JP.

The only rationale for choosing a .308 in a bolt action it to get a shorter, lighter rifle. If there's no difference in action length, the .30-06 makes more sense. In spite of what all the .308 fans say, it's still only almost as good as a .30-06.

takedown power is a phrase gun writers use that really means nothing. 30-06 allows you to shoot heavier bullets (165, 180, 200, 220 grain) where the 270 heaviest bullets is 150gr.

You can get .277 bullets up to 180 grains. They are very long and have to be seated quite deep. They can be hard to stabilize with 1:10 or slower twist rates as well but my Savage shoots them just fine. I do prefer 130 grain bullets in the 270 though.

Ignore all these Infidels and Heretics! Go with the Way God Meant it to Be. "6.5X55 Swedish for deer and 30-06 for moose and bear." ;)
That is some of the best advice I have heard. 6.5x55 and 300 win mag have you covered for almost everything in NA.

The few fps you gain in 30-06 are nothing compare to the big gain in precision you gain with the 308, i am not making that up that a 308 is more precise than a 30-06, this is a proven fact, just ask as the snipers of the world, not many are using the 06 at one point i will always favor precision over velocity... JP.

This probably calls for me to handle both a long and short action side by side. Sail might have one of each in stock although around here Lebaron has the best prices.

For the cost of decent, accurate bolt-action rifles, I would buy all four: 30-06, 270, 7x57, and 7mm-08... and then decide... of course they all do the same job with fairly equal results.

Big gain? If you mean that in most LR match shooting the 308 wins 60-70% of the matches vs the 30-06 by .1 of an inch, or by an extra x, then ok that's a big gain.

You can't push a 220 gr. bullet in a .308.

Whatever gave you that idea?

It's a .308 dia cartridge, shooting a .308 dia bullet, and the great majority of .308 win's have the 1-10 or 1-12 twist required.

You won't push it as fast as a 30-06, but I doubt if the game will be able to tell the difference between 220 @ 2350 fps or 220 @ 2500 fps.

A winner is a winner, a couple a year ago Hamilton became F-1 race car champ with one little point, do you remember who finish second... JP.

Doug, if the logic is that a .300 magnum is better than a .30/06, then a .30-378 must be better than a .300. Frankly I don't think so. If you're going to burn 70-100 grs of powder, and put up with ignorant blast and recoil, you might as well have 300 grs of bullet weight so something actually happens when the target is hit.

Hey Boomer, stirring the pot? LOL Believe me when my 200 gn bullet from my 300 Wby hits something, things happen, as can be attested to by more than 100 head of game.

Negative on the 30-378 for many reasons, all of which you know.

I personally don't care what the OP buys, as long as it isn't a stupid, game losing, anemic, ill thought out, Jack O'Conner touted .270 Win!!!! There is absolutely nothing a 270 will do that any number of cartridges won't do better. 6.5-06, 6.5-284, 264 WM, 284 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm WSM, 7mm RM, 7mm Wby, 7mm STW, 7mm RUM, 30-06, 300 WSM, 300 H&H, 300 WM, 300 Wby, any and all would be a better choice over a piece of junk 27 cal.

The only reason it was ever invented in the first place was because Americans of the day were too pigheaded to embrace the marvelous 6.5s and 7mms that were all over Europe, all of which are superior to the 270. Hasn't anyone else noticed that outside North America the 270 basically doesn't exist, even today. But hey, if you guys want to be American spoon fed stooges, who am I to critisize!!!

Be different, buy a CZ in 7 X 64 mm...............
