I saw some attractive pricing on close out Tikka T3 (making way for the T3x) in 270 WSM and 300 WSM. Which of the two would be your first choice for a mountain rifle with elk/moose as the primary target? Or just take advantage of a good deal and buy both, setting the 270 WSM up for longer range shooting and the 300 WSM up for closer range shooting with heavier bullet weights.

I know the T3s have strong recoil from the WSM cartridges - I haven't shot them personally.

.300 WSM for the moose and elk hunter who shoots some deer; and .270 WSM for the deer hunter who shoots some
moose and elk.

Same with .270 versus 30-06.

Same with 7mm Rem versus .300 Win.

It doesn't matter if the actual numbers work out as planned; it's all about perception and how you self identify.

Best advice I have is stay away from the short mags, there is a reason they are both avaible and on clearance. Depite what some on here will say they are all slowly becoming orphan calibres. These 2 are just slower then most

Do you plan on reloading? If so choose whichever you like, I personally lean toward the 270. If you don't plan on reloading, consider Razorbeck's comment and perhaps take a pass on these.
With 270wsm handloads, I can regularly hit a tennis ball at obscene distances and with the right projectile, any game in NA is doable.

x2 , feeding them is becoming difficult and expensive, no real advantage over more common calibers either.

Grizz

All t3's are on clearance and have been for months already.

I picked up a 270 WSM last Fall in the Savage Trophy Hunter Package.... I actually bought it to do a build into the 35 Sambar. I had to give it a try first though to see how it would shoot. Well, it was fantastic! Shot all three factory loads I tried into 3 shot MOA groups and my hand loads (Nosler Accubond LR in 150gr) are going 3/4 of inch. The recoil is really modest and it is really just a blast to shoot. I was not that intrigued with the WSM either but after picking up this 270 WSM I am quite impressed. As far as feeding the rounds into the chamber goes, I have had not trouble at all. I have found a lot of once fired brass and just recently bought 10 boxes of Federal factory ammo for it from one of this sites sponsors for $243 (taxes and shipping in) just because it was such a good deal. For $24.30 per box of loaded rounds how could I go wrong? Personally, I cannot see the 270 WSM going anywhere. There is just not that many options in the .277 caliber.
As far as my build goes.... it will now be a 358 Norma Mag instead, LOL.

I had a .270wsm that I deeply regret selling, extremely flat shooter and very hard hitter. I was able to work up some VERY hot loads with 150 gr sst's and Superformance powder. I'd choose the .270 because in Ontario we have a caliber restriction south of 89 of .275. This means the .270 can be used for small game in the south as well as big game up north, the .300 can't do that.

I'd go 300 WSM....don't think I've yet seen 270 WSM sitting on box store shelves.

Also the 270 wsm only has a 1 in 10 twist rate....whats the point???

I gotta say I'm loving my Rem xcr in 270wsm for deer, I think its an awesome Western cartridge for deer hunting, some might argue that there is not much of an advantage over the standard 270 win, and they are probably right, but I just really like the way it shoots for me.
On the other hand, I have an A-bolt in 300 wsm and I'm in the market for a 300 win mag to replace it with, no real issues with it at all, I don't handle it a lot as its my moose/elk gun. I have never had feeding issues or anything like that, I just kind of regret not getting the win mag.

270 and 300wsm are here to stay, 325 and 7mm are orphans for sure....I've never had the alleged feeding difficulties, in a savage, t3 and xbolt, all feed and shoot great

factory wsm ammo is quite easy to find where I shop

my signature line is fitting to this thread ;)

Either will work. Those that say the short mags are not popular don't know much. I've had 5 of them. What I like is the gun is shorter and lighter and in my 300 WSM I'm very close to 300 mag speeds. What is not to like? Those that say the cartridge doesn't feed well also don't have a clue what they are talking about. All of the rifles I had fed well.

I live in a small city in Saskatchewan with a population of 6500. There is 270 WSM ammo at both the Canadian Tire and the COOP. In Saskatoon, all of the retailers have it on the shelves. The internet is also an amazing way to get ammo, LOL.

In regards to the 1:10 twist, I agree a tighter twist would be nice but my 1:10 stabilizes the Nosler Accubond LR 150 grain no problem. The Berger Manual only recommends a tighter twist for their 170 gr EOL Elite; the rest of the Bergers they recommend a 1:10.
