I would like to find the answer to a friendly arguement between me and a couple of buddys. Is it legal in southern ontario to use a 270 win for coyotes? The regulations read .275 and smaller. A 270 win is bore size .277. I personally wouldn't use it even if it is legal.

It would be in your best interests to place a call to your local DNR office. This sounds like one of those "grey area's" that could cost you a whack of legal fee's and a season or two of hunting priviledges.

My .02

I called the Ministery and asked the same question. She told me "if it says 270 on the barrel of the rifle, thats what it is and yes it is legal". I said thanks and went out for yotes. Most of the guys I hunt with use 270 down here. Little over kill for yotes but hey.

Hunting regulations generally go by the caliber of the weapon, which is NOT the same as the bore diameter. I agree that it is not clearly stated. IMHO the .270 with 90 or 100 grain bullets is a great coyote gun. However, if hunting in a built-up area, I would be hesitant to use such a powerful cartridge.

Sounds lijke a good reason to have a 7X57 stamped .275 Rigby.

I had a chat with Chris, from the MNR over a different topic and ended up, a conversation about legal use of the 270 and 7mm for small game.

It was actually a conversation about the legalities of using full metal jacketed bullets.

Seems the 270 is legal enough, No judge in this country would question a few thousandths of an inch.

He mentioned the law would, however question 7mm(.284).:(

It is a lot of gun for a coyote, or even ground hog for that matter. But it's all I used here for many years and had no problems with the law.

Just a few problems with landowners complaining about the noise, cause the one acre lot owners who wanted to experience country life dont understand gun fire in the country(maybe they should move back to the city?)
Where theres a different type of noise pollution, and if they hear gun fire in the city, they can find comfort in knowing where it's coming from.:D

The regs state a caliber restriction not a bore diameter restriction. The 270win is legal, although as you've pointed out - perhaps a little overkill... I'd use the 270 perhaps, if for the only reason to practice my shooting for deer season and you weren't too worried about damaged pelts or pissing off neighbours with the noise.
