Does the 270 step on the heels of the 300 short mag?
where does the 300 out shine the 270?

for using on elk sized animals whats the advantages?

cheers
WL

Are you comparing 270 Win to 300 WSM or 270 WSM to 300 WSM ?

Either way, hunting cartridges are like cars, often the Toyota Camry is better in real-life than the BMW 5 series...
and 270/7mm cartridges are a better choice for most hunters since recoil is "acceptable" and 270/7mm cartridges have enough killing power for anything up to elk/moose at 200m.

If you're 100% confident that recoil is not an issue for you, go ahead and get a 300 Mag or even a 338 Mag but on average "lesser" cartridges are better.

Remember that you need a 13.5lbs 300 WSM to get the same recoil as a 9.5lbs 270 Win!!

300 short mag just shine everywhere over 270 win.

only by the numbers does it shine. The human element can throw that all out. The best rifle/cartridge combo is the one you can shoot well in all situations especially stressful awkward ones.

There are alot of magnum shooters that cannot shoot the gun well under pressure.

all things considered the gun you shoot best and most is the one to use.

My two go to rifles are a 270win, and a 300wsm both shoot more then good enough for light hunting rifles. My 270 load is a 140g tsx clocking 2880, and the 300 is a 168g ttsx clocking 3025fps. I have seen a couple bull elk go down to the 270 load with complete penetration, and excellent wound channels range was between 250, and 300yds. I just got the 300 last year after hunting season so havent seen on game performance yet, hopefully this fall.

They will obviously both work, the 300 gives you a little extra jam on both ends, and won't make up for a bad shot. Since I hunt moose/elk far more then deer my choice is the 300, but the 270 is rarely a bad choice. For teethy things I would prefer my Whelen, or a 338mag.

No offense to you in particular HOSSONE, but why do so many people on these forums worry about ammo being available every where?!

If your a non-reloader, I can see a small point being raised. BUT! If you dont reload, its just a smart practice to "plan" ahead for your ammo needs.
If you hunt/shoot where you need more ammo supplied, either bring more ammo, or rethink your hunting/shooting strategy.

I ALWAYS bring much more ammo than I need, in case my needs change part way through my trip.
I put a little ammo in my vehicle, pack, and suitcase.
That pretty much covers it.
If you are travelling to hunt and your worried about your ammo being lost on the way, just send some ammo to your destination/outfitter/friend in advance. Then bring some with you when you go.
And, no matter what caliber you shoot, if the firearm gets misplaced you are hoooped!

Thats just a peeve of mine, sorry for deviating from the subject of the post.

I was only talking about Numbers If you can't shoot it don't use it .
