28 gauges

I own a Beretta A400 28 ga Xplor w/28" barrel that I bought last January. Very nice carrying and shooting gun. It weighs 5#8oz in factory stock form empty. For skeet shooting I purchased a Beretta magazine cap that fits the Beretta A400 Xcel Black 12 gauge....the one with the black cap that weighs over 4 ounces. It adds around 4 ounces to the 28 ga A400 and interchanges in a moment with the factory cap which I put back on for hunting. I picked up the cap from Beretta, Canada...Stoeger Canada actually. Google "Beretta A400 Xcel Black magazine cap, Stoeger, Canada" and it should come up. It is noted as being for 12 ga but fits the 28 ga Xplor just fine. I knew it would as I had tried it off my 12 ga Xcel before I purchased one and like how it added a bit of weight to the 28 ga on the skeet range. Mine was in stock at Stoeger in Ontario last spring when I got it.

I've carried the A400 28 ga for a few days hunting this fall. Really like the way it carries and handles. Used the light weight factory magazine cap it came with. With 3 rounds in it, it balances fine. The 28" barrel keeps the balance point ahead of the bolt handle so it does not poke you in the hand when carrying it one handed. (I had a 26" barreled 20 ga auto years ago that the bolt handle did poke the carry hand and didn't like it in the field...or on the range). With a Modified choke and 7/8 oz reloads the little gun has proven very deadly so far!

I have one other 28 ga....a Beretta 686 20/28 ga combo gun. Unfortunately the 28 ga has 26" barrels and I don't shoot the short barrels near as well as the 20 ga set that are 28" long...even though they weigh close to the same, with the 28 ga barrels being slightly heavier. Might make a great tight cover grouse gun but costs me birds on the skeet course.

My AYA #3 ( SxS) in 28. ga. is my best grouse gun, & I have a few . Weight is 5 1/2 lb.
Years ago I used a 28 ga. Cooey M-84 on grouse sitting on logging roads about 40 + yds.
All killed with 1 shot.

The Remington 1100 Sporting 28 accounted for 28 grouse over the weekend for both my wife and I, including 3 doubles where one shot accounted for 2 birds (my wife doubled twice!)

WOW, 28 partridge(ruffed grouse) in one weekend. That's more than I get in most years put altogether.

He didn't say what type of grouse or if he is a FN hunter where bag limits would not apply. I shot 5 ruffs and 5 spruce grouse a week ago and let the other 17 go as I was limited out.

I currently have two 28 gauge guns, a Rem 870 Wingmaster and an 1100 Sporting... they get used marginally, but I always enjoy them when I do get them into the field.

Well your assumption may be well off. You know in some provinces limits vary!! Here in SK we have a 10 per person per day limit on grouse with 2 days possession allowed and I recall the same limits on Vancouver Island at one time while hunting with my Grandfather. So legally him and his wife may have been 12 short of their allowed 40 but you go there Super Warden and tell all how it is as you seem to know where he was hunting!

His location is NE BC, and I can confirm that the local grouse numbers are HUGE this year! My two buddies and I went for a 4 hour drive last weekend (on our annual 'chicken shoot') and we limited out... 10 each, and at least that many got away. Bag limit here is 10 (combined ruffed & spruce) per day, so he & wife are well under the 2 day bag/possession limit.

With that many in the freezer, I'll be more sporting this w/e and go for wing shots....
