280 AI - Does anyone else shoot this wildcat.

Never had one. Won’t go out of my way to find one either. I can overload a standard cartridge just as easy. No more Ackleysizing for this nutter.

I am the proud owner of a 280 AI barreled action. I had Ron Smith of Innisfail, Alberta make me a 26 " SS barrel and Dave Henry of D. Henry Gunmakers in Bentley, Alberta did the chambering and threading for me.

I built it on a Remington 700 BDL action, it was a 30-06 originally. My stock is coming from a fellow CGN'er and I have a nice set of Burris Signature series rings and bases to go on her. To top it of will be a Leupold VX II 3x9-50.

I think this thing will be a real tack driver and it should have the ballistics of a 7mm Mag.

If anyone else is shooting the 280 AI I'd be interested in chatting about some of the reloads you have experimented with.

Cheers

Old thread, the 280AI is no longer a wildcat, standarized by SAAMI in 2008.

280AI is prob the undisputed “ Best Ackley Improved cartridge ever “ ! No forming nessacary just shoot reg 280Rem or 280AI ammo and it does have a 100 -150 fps advantage over a reg 280 Rem with Handloads Also much better cartridge as it case stretches less . It’s The BEST cartridge of the 270-280-30-06 Family BUT that’s JMHO ! ;) Lol. RJ

REM M700 Mtn Rifle 280 Rem 22 “

HVA 1900 Custom Build 280AI 24 “

No, the most popular. Best Ackley Improved cartridge would be the 250-3000 IMO. It certainly gains the most over the base case. And yes, Ive owned quite a few Ackley's, Gibbs, RCBS Improveds, etc. - dan

The .280 AI with hot hand loads is quite an advantage over the factory loaded .280... but if you load the .280 to the same pressures as the AI version the difference diminishes greatly.

It's the same with claims about the .280AI matching Rem Mag velocities... load both cases to equal pressures and the AI does not perform the same as the Rem Mag case.

I believe the 250-3000 AI and the 257 Roberts AI had the biggest gains with normal pressure loading.

I shot one for years starting about 1970...

I shoot it. Because it's about the max I can handle without pain.
My kimber stainless select in .280ai shoots factory 140gr accubond .280 rem ammo into one ragged hole. It has accounted for a few moose and bears in the past few years.
Sadly due to a new business, house , being newly married and no leh this year it'll probably be parked for a while.

Back on topic: the 280ai doesn't do Anything that others won't do, but it does it while shooting very flat, while launcing a reasonably weighted projectile which usually has a higher than average bc, and does this with manageable recoil in a light handy platform

Its biggest appeal to me is it fits in a Kimber 84L. :)

I built one a few years ago on a Defiance AnTi action, Benchmark #2 barrel and it sits in an AG composites stock, with a Razor LHT on top. It shoots the factory Hornady Precision Hunter with 162 gr ELD-X into 5/8s of an inch at 100 and holds a very similar MOA group out to 300--the farthest I have shot it so far. I have tried a few handloads in it with similar results, but time, family commitments, work, and other hobbies keep me from the reloading bench. The rifle will see some daylight this fall in SE Alberta, as I have finally drawn my mule deer tag.

So far I think it is a fantastic cartridge, easy to shoot, mild recoil, and decently flat trajectory that provides more than enough energy beyond my comfortable shooting limits. Whats not to like?? Oh yeah, factory ammo is EXPENSIVE!

Paul Reiben(RIP) spun an RKS gain twist tube on a Rem 700 action and chambered it for .280AI.

Load development netted MOA or a bit better accuracy with 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, and Partition’s. They clock out at a solid 3000 fps at -15 celcius.

The elk moose and deer I’ve shot with that rifle were in no position to complain about bullet or cartridge performance.

Yes
put the 2 together and , dynomite , slim, lite weight , accurate and dependable

That was my thought's as well. I found a good price on a kimber mountain ascent 270 so I went with that and have no complaints with it. I already had a kimber montana 7wsm. If kimber ever chambered for the 284win I'de be all over it.

BUDDY has a Kimber Mountain Ascent in 284 Win. It was a 280 AI but it got rechambered . Seems like a SILLY thing to do as the 280AI outperforms the 284W . RJ
