280 AI - Does anyone else shoot this wildcat.

I have a New BenchMark .284 barrel 5R 1-9 twist #1 contour to go on a Tikka action and it will be chambered in 284 Win .
But also a Special order BM #1 Fluted going on a Rem M700 in 280 AI .

I like Both cartridges. . RJ

do not know that much on contour but will it be a lightweight one? just got my hand on some 7mm bullets and i do not know if to go with the easy 7x64 or the 284 for a lightweight rig and i will have a tikka action for it.

I wouldn't call the 7x64 the easy option on this side of the pond. Yes, i own one (a Brno), and it is a great cartridge, but you're not going to find ammo or brass easily. - dan

My one and only 280 AI was in a model 52 Cooper, and found it to be a lovely cartridge. However, it does not match the 7mm Remington Magnum for velocity, availability and cost of firearms, brass and ammunition.

Thinking about a 280 (or 270) kept light, on a model 70 action and wondering what weight the benchmark contour would be. More likely to go with a douglas #1 or fwt contour to manage weight. You know the drill, one last build!

M70 is not really a Very Light Weight action . Why a Douglas barrel ? Cost ? RJ

The douglas profiles trim quite a bit of weight and I believe many other barrel makers including Benchmark will contour to that profile.
After literally dozens of rifles I am pretty much a model 70 user (or the right mauser) unless there is a real reason to look elsewhere to get specific features.

I have a Ready to install Benchmark #1 FLUTED chambered in 280 AI finished at 22.5 length and it weight’s in at 32.5 oz I’m putting it on a Rem M70O Mountain Rifle now that’s a 280 REM 22 “ to make it MORE Better ! Lol ;)
That’s as light as you can get with out going shorter . RJ
