280 ai

First, you don't have to "over pack" the 7 RM to stomp a .280 AI, load them both to SAAMI Max with the same weight bullet from the same length barrel, and "voila," a clear winner. The 7 RM capacity is 80 grains, the .280 AI is only 65 grains... 15 grains is quite alot. Secondly, the answer is simple physics... it is not up to some factory loads you pulled off you local CT shelf... and it is not "down to the specific rifle." Anyone, including manufactures can down load one cartridge and upload another and claim a win, but AGAIN, with equal parameters the .280 AI cannot beat the 7 RM or even get within 100 fps... when loaded to SAAMI Max with same weight bullets and same barrel lengths... how else can cartridges be legitimately compared? Looks like the the .280 AI is your pet and you are defending it no matter what the science dictates... Kind of like Ballistic Wokeness...

good write up Hoyt ..ONE big problem
handloads vs factory that 75 % hunters use
so your above , means nothing to the avg Joe
pounding yur chest cause it feels good when you stop ..good greif

If 75% of hunters aren’t hand loaders. Then that makes the 280AI a pretty stupid choice compared to the 7MM RM for that crowd.

Honest question. Do you actually own your own chronograph or are you pulling our leg?

You are either 15 years old, or seriously impaired... or possibly a lonely, but skilled troll... there is no reasoning with the "purple hair" cult... you are the Ballistic equivalent.

Can you tell.me what study the 75% is from?
The reason I ask is because the vast majority of the hunters and shooters I know actually hand load .

Exact opposite the.280 makes more sense. In factory,,,Geez, And yes i have 3 personal chronies
You hand freaks don’t like the results Plain and simple
The 280ai in some rifles with factory ammunition is a better choice than the 7. Take it or leave it I have proved it.

I have talked personally to the manufacturer. All were in that range. Yes on here handloading is more prominent

7mm RM factory ammunition is far more available than 280AI ammunition.

Damn it would suck to be stuck only shooting factory rifle ammo. I suppose it's okay for those that don't enjoy shooting much and/or shoot very infrequently.

If you are stuck shooting factory ammo then the 7mm PRC is an attractive choice for those that want an actual performance increase over 7mmRM factory ammo.

Do not hand load anymore as the difference I have found from the newer factory loads to the hand loads of old are not that spellbinding .Finding components can be an issue and yes do not shoot as much as I used to but continue to hunt perhaps more. I chose the 280 AI as my new custom because I did like the ballistics for handloads but have pretty well stuck with the factory cartridges for the past few years. Better than a 7 mm well it does not kick as much but that could be the custom stock over the factory remington on my 7.No regrets and has done the job with no issues and is a pleasure to shoot, if I want recoil I'll just take my 30 PRC out that get's my attention.

Nobody is knocking the .280 AI, it is a good all-around cartridge choice and is offered in some nice platforms... but people need to be realistic about its potential in comparison to other cartridges available. The reality is 99% of the time there is something bigger or faster... there are other factors to consider, recoil is only one, ammo/component availability is another, but probably the biggest decider is determining what is "enough" to do the job well, without overkill, OR underkill. Most of the cartridges based on the /06 case answer that question.

Well said hoytcanon, so many great cartridges/bullets these days, we are very fortunate to have all the choices we do, never mind the wonderful array of optics.

That’s a nice looking rifle Mike thanks for sharing, 280 AI is one of my favourites for sure.

I'm not going to switch to AI because I have a 280 and it does the job for me, but still, could someone please explain to me why the 280 AI is better than the 280 Remington?

A good bullet in the right spot and game knows little difference. The AI is great but so is my 280. Once your lethal limit is reached ( some say 1000 C.P. ) a couple hundred fps matters little.

It's better because of higher velocities. That was the objective of P.O. Ackley, to straighten the case walls and give it a sharper shoulder to add more gun powder. The guy was brilliant! I have his book, it's a dry read, similar to college and university text books.
