284 win

I think I've read the same posts, it certainly looks interesting. It would be difficult to get a reamer and dyes for the 7 rpm me thinks.

Not really. There's a few die makers who will make them. Or once you have the reamer you can buy die blanks and cut them with the same reamer you cut your barrel with. - dan

I regularly thought about the .284 in my bighorn/goat hunting obsession years in the 1970's. Fretted over the trajectory differences between the 150 grain bullets out of my 21" Husky featherweight 30/06 and what a rebarrel job to .284 would give me. The allure was strong.

But on the other hand, to get to the top of the mountains and then back down, we were moving through primo elk and moose habitat. No surprise: more elk and moose were shot on those trips than bighorns once we got to the top. And the grumbly bears were on those same trails as well.

So I liked (still do) being able to swap out the flat shooting 150 grain bullets for 180 grain Partitions (or heavier). In the hunting world where with one rifle you can be hunting bighorns one day/one morning, and hunting elk/moose the next, the .284 won't do anything that a plain jane 30/06 won't do. It will certainly do some specific things better: a featherweight flat shooting sheep rifle; a long range prairie rifle for antelope and deer.

Ultimately, I never did tilt to get a .284, despite still liking the package it offers. Came close to buying a few on display at gun shows over the years, but never quit dug out my wallet. If I didn't have such a wide range of big game to hunt within a couple of hours of the house, maybe I would have rebarreled a rifle to .284 for sheep and goat hunting.

But as it is, I already have guilt complex because some very fine hunting rifles that sit in my gun safes rarely if ever get out hunting. I hang my head with shame that they mostly go to the range instead of out hunting. One more at this stage would make it worse.

Fixed it for you. This updated version of your post is the bane of all gunnutz, myself included, who in a fit of practical thinking keeps coming back to this reality and thus realize how much simpler life cold have been with a LOT less expense. :)

I used a buddy’s reamer to make a 30-284 resulting in ballistics similar to the 30-06…in a short action. It’s a good cartridge design for this wildcat.

But think of all the months at the reloading bench, gun range, etc I would have deprived myself of!

The one tiny air of superiority I can attempt to display is I'm not one of those Gunputz that has to hang his head and shamefully confess he can buy factory ammunition for all the guns he owns.

Ha ha ha. The last box of factory other than rimfire I bought was a couple box's of .284 Win in 1967 or 8, brass was unattainable in AB for the cartridge and re-using factory loads was the only method available....I can remember spending an hour searching for one brass that was ejected into a snow drift on a WT hunt. I didnt leave until I found it neither.

30-284 and a 33-284 would be both GREAT cartridges ! I already have the 6.4-284 and 284 now ! RJ

I have a Shooting Times article somewhere that they did when the 284 came out, necking it up and down to all the common bore sizes. friend of mine shoots a 30-284 on a Montana rifle action. Nice rifle. - dan

Great cartridge!

Browning ? Hmm ! RJ

Yup, Browning chambered the 284win for a while in their A-bolt and the BLR. I have the micro medallion 284 with 20" barrel. The problem with browning, if it is a problem, is the 2.800" mag box, it's not long enough. Also there is a lot of freebore so the bullets have a lot of jump. I've loaded 160 gr bullets out long and they proved to be very accurate but I have to load these individually not through the magazine.
