284 win

The 284 has always been of interest to me. I ended up going with a 7saum, now onto regular 280 rem and a 280ai... I would like to build a nice short 284, blued with some nice wood! I have so many ultralights...

Sandals vs stilettos...

Which is which?

I see the 280 as sandals and thus the better, more practical choice.

The 280 in a 700 leaves lots of extra room in the box whereas the 284 soon jams up in OAL in a short action. Probably can't get brass for either these days, but the 280 is easy to form from a couple cousins.

Short vs long... the .284 is Sandals, the .280 is the stilettos...

What does the 7x57 have over a 280? At least the 284 will fit in a short action and it also does well in F-Class in a standard length action but you already know that. :)

I have a 7x57 and a 280. The latter gives me a few more FPS, but I prefer the 7x57 for no reason that makes sense. :)

I have somehow accumulated a silly number of 7mm rifles in 7 WSM, 7 RSAUM, 7mm-08, 7X57, 7X64, .280 and a current 7mm project rifle that is so silly I will not discuss it for fear of ridicule. I also just sold a .284 rifle. If I was forced to live with only one, it would probably be the 7X64, although the 7X57 would do just as well.

I have owned a couple of 284 chambered rifles, plus a custom in 6.5/284.

They do exactly what you would expect them to do. Kill game efficiently.
Washed the throat in the 6.5/284 in 1800 rounds,so not really bad, IMHO.

These days I'm happy with my 2 - 7x57's [700 Classic & Ruger #1AB]
Plus an older 700 in 7mm Rem Mag.
Dave.

Anything less than .308 is a coyote rifle...

I've shot a small number of moose with a 35 Whelen, 375magnum, 308 and used a 7x57 for the same on 2020. They all died about the same.

The next time I get to go, I will be taking a 300H&H. Maybe that one will work better. :)

Similar to my two 7X57's in an M77 Mark II and No.1-A...

Problem with the 7x64 (and yes, I have one, and a couple of 280's) is ammo and brass. Not easy to come by now, a decade or more back it was extremely difficult. I got my first factory ammo for mine from a hunting buddy in Spain. - dan

I use 280 brass for my 7x64, works fine, shoulder is just a few thou longer in the 280, so a pass through the FL die is all it needs.

the reason John nosler created the partition: you will be in good hand with the 300hh and moose, Paul.
