If 140's are what it is feeding on, the 6.5 version is a better choice.
6.5 x 284 is only around 2950 fps - RJ
Looks like no better then a 7-08 by the quick load Data and in REAL life there isnt much difference with GREAT handloads ! RJ
the 284 is about 20% larger capacity than the 7-08, which means around 5% more velocity, apples to apples (135 fps +/-). If the 284 is loaded to a longer non SAAMI OAL it will increase a bit more yet
Running QL data to the same specs as the 20" 284 above, the average velocity for the top six fastest powders is 2783 fps
The benefit is in the bullet, not the velocity.
For those who have one, how does the 284 win perform with a 20” barrel?
Damn you Dave, you know I don't like public speaking.
NOT much difference - RJ
yeah......but I didn't want to type something out and then edit all of my mistakes out of it......
7mm-08, 284 win, 7x57 and 280 rem are all so close to each other, choose any and concentrate on bullet placement, the biggest factor to velocity gains between all 4 of them is........barrel length and free bore, and when you cut your chamber to take advantage of the 284 case with the bullet in the neck and out of the powder column, you need a long action, and the 284,7x57 and 280 all in long action, run neck in neck.....
Yes..... but you don't see 7x57 and 280's in F-class so for that the 284 has an edge. There's also a reason why Ultra Light Arms most popular chambering was 284, it fits in a short action. Those are the only advantages imo.
