I think the .284 is a fantastic cartridge BUT I think it was before it's time. I would prabably go for a 7mm saum or 7 wsm instead of the .284. Now I'm not trying to be trendy, you still get a short action, a short fat case, and more velocity. You can load either cartridge down to .284 velocities if you want to, and my local hardware store is now stocking wsm factory ammo right beside the .300 win and .30/06. A rem model 7 in 7mm saum would be a nice lightweight rifle, or a Kimber 84m classic, or montana in 7mm wsm would be my pick. Of course I've got a 84m ordered in 7mm-08, so the 7 wsm will have to wait. BUT now that I think of it, the 7mm-08 is only 100fps slower than the .284, and I don't think I have to list the advantages of the 7mm-08. The only answer is,
that I should just have one of each! After looking at the numbers closer, you could reach .284 velocities by just improving the 08, or going with the .280 instead. Oh well, just a thought.![]()
I've often thought about 7mm-08 ai but I'm not too pumped up about forming all my brass.
Haven't heard much on this round in a long time. Anybody have a nice bolt gun in the .284? I'd like to have one in a S/A lightweight.

If that be the problem, wouldn't a Two-Eighty be a better choice?Only problem that some guns have is the mag length. To gain full value out of the 284 you want to be able to seat the bullets far enough out, and that can cause some problems in short actions and can require a bit of modifications....

What would the weight difference be between a 700 long action and a 700 short action, all else being equal?
.
I have never had an AI rifle, but can you not just fire the factory version ammo to fire form your brass??![]()
