Haven't heard much on this round in a long time. Anybody have a nice bolt gun in the .284? I'd like to have one in a S/A lightweight.

:nest: I think the .284 is a fantastic cartridge BUT I think it was before it's time. I would prabably go for a 7mm saum or 7 wsm instead of the .284. Now I'm not trying to be trendy, you still get a short action, a short fat case, and more velocity. You can load either cartridge down to .284 velocities if you want to, and my local hardware store is now stocking wsm factory ammo right beside the .300 win and .30/06. A rem model 7 in 7mm saum would be a nice lightweight rifle, or a Kimber 84m classic, or montana in 7mm wsm would be my pick. Of course I've got a 84m ordered in 7mm-08, so the 7 wsm will have to wait. BUT now that I think of it, the 7mm-08 is only 100fps slower than the .284, and I don't think I have to list the advantages of the 7mm-08. The only answer is, :runaway: that I should just have one of each!

The .284 is a fine fine cartridge, my brother has one with a short 21" hart barrel on a ruger action, with scope only weighs 6.8lbs and he drives a 150gr Partitions at 3000 fps it also shoots small little holes at 100 yards.
I have a light weight 7mmwsm just over 7lbs with scope, but recoil is a factor, I was thinking of making up a light F class gun in 7mmwsm but watched fellows shooting them at Connaught again recoil is a big factor and barrrel life also, the 6.4/284 very popular in F class have a very short barrel life. After reading this articale I thing this is way to go for F class and even for fine hunting gun.

I built one on a 1909Arg. Douglas bbl@20",lenghthed chamber to 3.1",Birdsong black T coating and, has Talley Ruger bases.Presently under an Aimpoint 5000 2x. Don't think I'll ever sell it. JITC

My thinking is that you would gain on the 7mm-08 and still have a standard bolt face, and less recoil than the wsm or saum, in a mountain style rifle.

Would a standard mag box allow for proper feeding for the .284, if you rechambered a 7mm-08?

After looking at the numbers closer, you could reach .284 velocities by just improving the 08, or going with the .280 instead. Oh well, just a thought. :)

I had a .284Win built on an blueprinted M70 Stainless Action in a Bansner Stock built by Bill Leeper. It was a HELL of a gun and I was stupid enough to sell it to a member here.....heh

The 284 is a great cartridge....one of the best 7mm rounds IMO. Nice short action, plenty of power for anything in NA, and a pleasure to shoot.

Only problem that some guns have is the mag length. To gain full value out of the 284 you want to be able to seat the bullets far enough out, and that can cause some problems in short actions and can require a bit of modifications....

Overall, one of my favorite calibres. I have a 7mm-08AI being built right now....should be a nice rig for sure. The 7-08 is a hell of a choice as well IMO...

If you go .280 you're stuck with a long action for sure then. I've often thought about 7mm-08 ai but I'm not too pumped up about forming all my brass. I also like the .280 ai and you can get nosler brass in .280 ai if you can find it. Either way, you're .284 and .280 are .30/06 capacities it just depends if you like short and fat or long and skinny. When it comes right down to it, if a nice .284 came along at a good deal I might take it, but I don't think I'd get a custom rifle built in it. ;)

If that be the problem, wouldn't a Two-Eighty be a better choice?

What would the weight difference be between a 700 long action and a 700 short action, all else being equal?

Mine. Not lightweight though. It's built on a medium-length mauser action which is PERFECT for the 284, and allows you to seat the bullets out a ways to eek a little bit more capacity out of the cartridge. A deep seating depth was always the weak point of the 284, seat it out longer and you can fit a bit more powder in while keeping pressures within tolerance

.

4 or 5 ounces.

Probably why there isn't any .284's around.

Isn't seating depth the problem with most cartridges though? If you want to use heavier bullets, you need them to go out further, even in a long action the mags can be limiting.

.284

Rackmaster's .284 is built on a stainless Model 70 S/A.I can load out to over 3",giving me lots of room to seat bullets out. With the extra room, more powder.I'm working up a load with 150 Scirrocco's at about 3000fps,out of a 23" Pacnor barrel. That's all the zip I need!I also have 2 .280's and a .280AI,but the .284Win is a sweet little package! Mur :D

I have never had an AI rifle, but can you not just fire the factory version ammo to fire form your brass??

Yes you can!:) BUT I have to buy factory ammo and then I have to shoot it, which will probably make me a better shooter (just from the practice) and then I have to load it (which will make me a better loader), and then I have to shoot it (which will make me a bettter shooter) just to see what's going on. AND it should all work, but I might loose interest by the time I'm done. But if it's THE shooter it's all worth while. So you tell me? Is the AI worth it? I dunno.:dancingbanana:

I guess if you want short action, 7mm-08 or 7mm-08ai, if you want long action .280, or .280 ai, or if you just want to be different .284 is the ticket in either short or long, whart ever suits you! What ever the best deal is, I would rather buy a .284 than build it, I would build the .280ai, near 7mm mag performance with no belt, I hate belts, but that is a whole new thread!
