I can't follow any of this story. Robot deer, on the road or not on the road, gut or not, full auto is ok, no tags? 
I bet F&W Officers pee themselves in anticipation of hunting season each year knowing they'll be catching people like this. If a person is willing to come on this site and relay a story like this then imagine the stories a F&W Officer could tell!!

Why are some people so stupid?
Does this guy know the message he's sending to the Non-hunting community?
All of the ETHICAL hunters enjoy their sport and take pride in the fact that they are making the attempt to show non-hunters that we are able to practice our sport in a safe manner while abiding the law.
I would not shoot an animal illegally as I find there's no way to enjoy in it.
If i'm looking to put meat on the table I'll go to the grocery store, it costs a lot less anyway.

I really can't imagine shooting a fake deer. I know a few people who have though, and they can't live it down... even a decade later it still gets mention.
I've watched it hapen on TV when the COs film for evidence, then sell the tapes to Dummest Criminals. I laugh each time some nut shoots at the decoy.

If I recall correctly (which doesn't always happen) I think this is only applies for a few areas (townships maybe) and these areas are specified in the regs, everywhere else in ON you just have to be off the road - there is no minimum distance.
As for shooting a 5-incher instead of a four, ya he should have been sure before he shot, but I think one inch is too close to call. Not poaching in my mind and I would take it to court for sure. Why would the dummy deer be so close to 4 inches? They should be a big fat rack on it so there is no question.
There are just so many stupid things happening in this story, that all I can do is a face palm and a head shake.
Pay the fine. Say goodbye to the rifle forever. It's a goner.
Maybe next year, if he can get a license next year, he'll only shoot at what he has a tag for, and will take a good long look at what he shoots at.

If you think 1" is too close to call,don't hunt bighorn sheep in Alberta as you will be charged if the horns are 1/4" too short.I passed up a very old mature ram because we couldn't be 100% sure that it was legal.The bottom line is that it is up to the hunter to be sure that the animal is legal before shooting.If you have any doubt at all,don't shoot.
The simple fact is that the person in question fired at a robot deer with 5" antlers when he only had an antlerless tag.According to the story,if the antlers were larger than 4",he was going to have someone buy a tag for an antlered deer,so he really wasn't afraid to break the law.People with so little respect for the regulations deserve to be charged when they break the law,so he got what he had coming,and I don't feel at all sorry for him.
The purpose of the decoy isnt to catch guys shooting bucks with doe tags...it is to catch guys shooting from their vehicles...the fact that this guy got out of his truck is the only thing that saved him from big trouble...but whether the buck was 5", or B&C..the OP said his dad would have shot anyway, so it is irrelevant...

I wish they setup a "Fluffy" on every section, and had a CO behind every tree...I have nothing to hide. I follow the laws, tag my deer, and hunt from my feet...I wish more would too.

Shouldn't this warning about an active law enforcement operation be locked or incur an infraction? Poachers damage the reputation of legit hunters and CGN shouldn't be branded as a place where people are issuing warning to people choosing to hunt illegally.

Not 100% true.. there is a chart in the Ontario Reg where there is a clear distinction between areas, some allow you to have a loaded firearm on the road (but no shooting across, or in the 8 meters) some you can't shoot and you can't be loaded). some have conditions about deer season (See below)
Page 21 has the details.

of a road (or fenceline where one exists)
at any time AND no discharge of a
firearm from or across a right-of-way for

the more you explain the situation the more it sounds like he got what he deserved.
i know my dad got what he deserved. and i thinkk they did the right thing giveing him the fine and now he will hunt the real way (i hope) when i am with him i make him walk, or tree stand (also when he seen it he was going 40-50mph on his way to buy more smokes in town.... (that is y he passed the deer by 100or so yards) so he was not road hunting

No-wonder I quit hunting.
I never could understand why someone would poach game during hunting season.
If you needed the meat that bad and couldn't afford the tag, why not wait for a couple weeks after the seasons close (or hell, anyother time of the year) and go kill some food - instead of doing it while there are LEOs and true sportsmen afield to nab you?

That's why I shoot all my whooping cranes in May. Less hunters and CO's around.
