I would disagree,I find the .410 to be an oddball cartridge more used just because its a .410.Of course there will be many that swear by it but I have personally never seen any use except for skeet. The 28/20 g step is far more realistic as the loads can be very similiar with varying degrees of recoil.Shot 6500 doves in Argentina in 3 days half with 28 half with 20 no appreciable difference imho.I like my 28 but the 20 has its place to, personal preference I guess my go to gun last year for upland was a 16 g Model 12 smooth as butter on a 20g frame .Like them all but .410 is not something I use or would again .my .02 RD

well if you are a doubter Look it up Los canares in Cordoba Argentina ,78,000 doves shot in one week don't need to prove it, happened ,was a once in a lifetime well maybe twice![]()
Wow, I was away from the week-end but the responses are amazing!
A few clarifications on my original post:
- I don't reload
- I want something for small game, mainly grouse, perhaps for wabbit too. But other than that, never seen a pheasant in my neck of the woods!
28ga boxes of ammo are something else. Just checked on availability and price...OOF. 36$ for a box of 25 Federal, can go as low as 18$ for Challengers. And not much choice either. It's a case of "don't forget your own ammo on your hunting trip", cause the local gas station probably won't have much in terms of 28ga ammo for sale.
I often bring my .410 (a youth rossi single-shot) and it's the bomAim 1-1.5" high (full choked) and it takes the head clean off with 2.75" shells loaded with #7.5. The grouses where we hunt moose are not easily spooked and they stay on the ground even when you're 15-20 ft away. If there's more than one grouse, once you fire your first shot, then they'll take flight. But last year, I stumbled across about 8 grouses in the same area and was able to get 5 (the daily limit) with a 12ga. I couldn't reload fast enough! Good times.
I'm specifically looking at a Churchill 520 vs 528. There's only about 1/3 of a pound difference between the 2 (5.6lbs for the 20ga vs 5.3lbs for the 28ga).
I was heavily leaning towards the 520 any how, but my local dealer doesn't even have the 528 available (he does have the 536 (.410) version in stock, but not really what I want).
Will probably end up with the 520 ;-)

The 410 is actually the shotgun that I have the least use for. As a ground swatter, weight isn't an issue, and aiming high with a 12 or 20 gauge kills better than a 410, with less shot in the meat than centering a bird in the pattern with a 410.
Out of curiosity, what would a hunt like that cost? Would 20 K seal the deal ,all in. Im not joking but serious. Its at the top three of my bucket list!! Did you shoot any ducks while there? Thanks
It's way less than $20K
I priced a 5 day cordoba dove hunt with an added water buffalo hunt and spa package for the wife couple years ago and factoring in 1500 rounds of 20ga a day and gun rental (beretta 391 they said it was alot less hassle to rent a gun then to bring 2 in and i wanted my rifle for the buffalo) with air travel all said and done was just shy of 15 grand without tips. Mind you that was a slightly upgraded package with chefs and premium wine and a sight seeing day. 3 day dove hunt morning and evening and 1 day buffalo hunt and one day tour of the plantation and peaks. More if i shot more ammo. That was a few years ago
There was some very affordable dove hunts in Argentina if you were willing to discover the birthplace of crack sleep in a shack and get hep a b and c but i couldnt talk the wife into those accommodations.
Ultimately a skimpy dress hooker heels and to much bourbon and my pull out game got weak so i got a daughter instead of a dove hunt. Now im just waiting until i can take my daughter with me.
Likely going to be some great deals once things start opening up again though
