28ga: Is the hype real?

Maybe we think different? I have shot many (perhaps a dozen in past 2 years) of 1 inch and smaller 3 shot groups with this rifle at 100 yards, from a rest. It makes me very, very confident that I will call my shot on the bear within an inch of impact, at such "short" ranges. Have never got close to that with the 28 gauge - have never fired slugs - so the shotgun is not my first choice for this job. I doubt I can recover quick enough for a second round with the larger cartridges - no particular advantage that I see with the smaller ones. Will not be about "fun" or "sport" - my intention would be "one shot - one kill"... or if not a "drop-right-there-stone-dead" kill, then the fight is to be stopped.

Up and down the road here, many neighbours prepared for similar - 303 British, 30-06, etc. I do not know of any with shotguns. For most, is their choice of the one "big game" rifle that they own. I have no doubt that all will work fine.

I either hunt with SxS 16 gauges or a nice hammerless single shot 28 gauge. If you are like me and don’t need to limit out every time to leave birds for another day a few shots with a 28 gauge single is nice and carrying it is a breeze. Just don’t shoot a 28 with anything less than a 28 inch barrel. The momentum with the longer barrel on a light gun just works.
