Well, guys we are one month out, the weather is warming up and the snow is melting (took a long time this year).
Roughly 18 shooters have shown interest or confirmed they are coming. I will be capping this at 24 confirmed shooters so there is still room.
We now need to indicate who is bringing what:
- at least 10 sturdy tables with rests/bags, less if shooters are going prone. I have two tables. Best if everyone brings their own rests/shooting mats/tarps - more better
- spotting scopes for each shooting point (each shooter must shoot with a spotter - safety and seeing where that bullet hits)
- each person brings a chair or two. There is little to no cover so if someone has a pop up awning or two, that would be great. No outhouse so come prepared for 'being with nature'.
- we need to confirm how many shooters need a ride. Road is 4X4 access only.
- Gongs, clays and balloons other targets are welcomed so please let me know what you are bringing up. Just make sure that you will clean up after (clays will melt but everything else, that doesn't rot, has to be cleaned up).
- need at least two more FRS radios for range control. Everyone will need to take turns with range/road control. Expect to do one/two session each day.
- I am sure that everyone will bring their own food and drink up. Portable stoves/BBQ's are just fine. No alcohol or drugs. If you smoke, you will need an ashtray so we don't have butts on the ground.
This is a preliminary agenda:]
Meet at Summerland High School and rolling by 8:30am (please don't be late) Sat. April 14. Set up by 10am and start shooting. Last year it was 'range open' until everyone got tired and needed a break. If we get 24 shooters, I will likely limit to 15mins of open range time followed by a switch of shooters, then changing targets/range control crews. You will be shooting ALOT (weather permiting) so bring ammo, cleaning/loading supplies, spare barrels
Distances will start at about 500yds and go out to 850yds on the 'short' range. The longer range is 900yds to about 1200yds. Anyone wanting to practice 1km BR will get lots of time as there is a very convenient target at 1000m. The extra long range starts around 1300m and goes to 1600m (ask IVO, he's been there).
I will make up a map of the area so you will have distances to targets. We will clean up for the day by 4pm.
Don't worry if you can't sight in much past 100/200yds. Make up a drop chart and I can easily dial you in. Just make sure the rifle IS sighted in though with as much up elevation on your scope as you can get. The short range terrain makes it very easy to sight in by spotting impacts.
I haven't heard of much interest to go further so we will shoot both days at the same location. Most targets are local boulders and rocks. Impact areas are on the sides of hills and open/protected with very limited access (but why we still have spotters for each shooter). Biggest intruder is likely to be wild horses and deer - these we don't shoot. coyotes are definitely in the area and season is still open me thinks - these you can if you have a license.
If there is interest on Sunday, we can arrange some fun events. At this point, I am just leaving as open shooting. Nothing organized, you just go where ever your turrents take you.
For those that showed interest, I need a firm confirmation by April 6th with your list of gear. If you don't confirm but show up, you may not get to shoot much if we are over subscribed. Plus, I will not wait past 8:30 for late comers.
Sat evening dinner can be at a local pub or Euro semi fancy restaurant (still not that expensive). Let me know which you prefer and I will make reservations. The Rosedale Motel is stumble friendly from either location.
Sunday will start at 8:30 with the same routine. I will shut it down for clean up by 2:30. Wonder who will still have ammo. This is a good time to put your portable reloading gear together.
We are shooting on crown land so each shooter is responsible for where their bullet lands and for their garbage. I offer no liability or third party insurance nor am I responsible for shooters actions. Hearing and eye protection is a must as we will have some very big boomers with muzzle brakes.
I would appreciate volunteers to help me with range officer duties. Common range safety rules and etiquette will apply. Unsafe shooters will be asked to leave - no exceptions!
