3 Gun basics please / equipment / location

For the CHAS 3-gun matches (Genesee) you just need to register. But, do so quick as they fill up super fast. If you get into the CHAS 3-gun facebook group you'll get the best information.

Last year I shot my M305 (since been sold) at some CHAS matches. I would strongly encourage you to get some 10rnd XCR-M magazines and use those. I found it very helpful to have 3-d printed mag extensions as well. The short XCR-M mags don't fit well in magpouches.

This year CHAS has a Heavy Metal Pro division, but only a couple of us are shooting it. It would be great to see more participating in this division. As a plus, you only need on round on target with Heavy Metal. I've joked that Heavy Metal should be able to shoot through cover without penalty (7.62x51 has been turning cover into concealment since the '50s) :) .

Speaking from experience, get shell caddies and learn how to dual-load and/or quad load. The shotgun stages can make or break a match, depending on the round count.

Also, the guys at CHAS 3-gun are great for letting you borrow equipment and giving good advice. Don't be afraid to show up to a match as a spectator and ask questions.

Copy that Colin. I'll be using the M305a though - fires x39 and uses AK mags

Haha yes. I'm interested in that as well. Would love to bring the Garand

Yup working on the shell caddie thing - other styles should be at my house soon for when I get home

And you bet - that's good. Same as me - love helping shooters out. I just ordered molle pistol mag holders to go on my chest rig and free up space for the shotgun shells , but I do t think will be here on time for Nov 2 .... well speaking of which I should register.

Thanks all

Lol nobody noticed he stated M305 ***a*** its 7.62x39 people! Be sure to check that ur 7.62x39 ammo complys with competition rules at Whatever event ur shooting!

Noticed it, but ammo restriction is not a concern at ranges I shoot so 7.62x39 isn't really an issue.

Yup got registered and getting a bunch of help from the members. Fog is clearing and I'm not asking many questions too much now. Looks like they look after there own , so I'll have help , super stoked here ...... ya I mentioned that rifle and nothing about its calibre. Gonna bring my M1 garand jic for heavy metal league and someone allready mentioned they'd lend me there 870 cause my pump is lacking a stock ATM ..... so , so cool. Come out and watch me bungle it all on Nov 2. Lol

I'm shooting FMJs out of the carbine .... surprise surprise , but ya ,Chas hasn't mentioned ammo to me yet

You're going to have a great time. If I never had a newborn at home I'd be there on the 2nd too.

Thanks man and congratulations on the new one.
Ahhh that sucks for me - would have been awesome to meet you and pick your head some more. Yeah since having 3 kids last 7 years I don't shoot so much anymore. But am hoping to change all that and have some fun and get gud. Meet people instead of ..... ya..... self inflicted stress

Just double check that your rounds are not steel core as chas does not allow steel core ammo.

Just so you're not surprised - at CHAS 7.62x39 doesn't qualify for Heavy Metal. That cartridge doesn't make the power factor. .308/7.62x51 will definitely do the trick though. If you use your M1 Garand you'll be good to go for Heavy Metal.

(Oh, and it's the AIA mags that are compatible with the M305, not the XCR-M mags. So disregard what I said about getting XCR-M mags for an M305 )

FMJ or not doesn't matter. What matters is if they're steel core because we don't allow steel core to be used on steel targets at 3 gun. There are non-steel core options available for 7.62x39. If it's surplus, it's probably steel core. If it's commercial new manufacture, it usually isn't.

For heavy division, you need to shoot a 308 Winchester cartridge or greater (in power), so 7.62x39 and 300 blackout won't qualify. For a first match, I wouldn't worry too much about divisions, instead I'd pick the most capable/reliable guns and run those.

Hey Adriel, would .458 SOCOM meet your power requirements for heavy metal?

This
We are always skeptical of x39 at our range too because of the surplus steel core. Chews up targets.
(And M855 which people love to bring out but shouldnt but dont care to learn about it)

We've found the exact opposite.

Normal .223 is as damaging or more so than steel jacket/core 7.62x39. None of the MP3G clubs ban steel jacket/core 7.62x39.

Steel core I believe also presents a potential fire risk when smacking steel... I believe the Medicine Hat 3 gun events allow steel core. So u could look into them! they put on matches that are well worth the drive.
