590 is a very popular and inexpensive option for 3 gun. Get it threaded for chokes and your pretty much set.

Also not a bad idea to take 1 or 2 coils off the trigger spring.

I'd also recommend moving this thread to action shooting forum, you'll perhaps get more relevant feedback there. If you're in my area, I don't mind if you borrow mine for a match.

already have a 14" 870 just playing around with plans for next year the 18.5 nova looks good but I like the idea of choke tubes

I started 3 gun in Canada with a 870P 7 + 1 and after first match got a 590 8+1.
Then sent the 590 out for chokes.
Loading the 590 is way easier than loading the 870.

For a pump 3 gun you will want at least 8 + 1 capacity

For a semi I tried the Cool-aid M2.

Went with the Winchester SX3 3.5" for when I head to the US next year.
I love this gun. First match, with this gun will be the Zombie match this weekend.

lets define what 3-gun you are referring to.
Are we discussing a build for 3 gun like we see in the states? (3 gun nation and events like that)
Or are we discussing tactical, room clearing, shoot from cover type of matches?

I only really shoot the first one.
I prefer the Benelli nova/supernova with a 24" barrel for Canada.
3.5" chamber means that the loading and ejection ports are larger than normal so loading is a little easier.
Comes with chokes.
Supernova comes with a comfortech stock which reduces recoil a little (or so they say)

If only shooting in Canada, I'd go with a pump for capacity.
If shooting US, you'll be more competitive with a semi and for that I would lean towards a Benelli M2.
I haven't handled or shot the Remington Versamax but it had been gaining popularity in 3gun circles in the US.

mostly the first with a few seconds in the mix

I did up a build just for 3gun and i'd say either a 24" Supernova with extended tube and side saddle or I did a 20" 590A1 with a pile of aftermarket available (oversize safety, remove 1 hammer spring for lighter trigger, trigger job, extended mag tube, threaded for 870 chokes, mesa side saddle, hogue forend/stock, knoxx recoil reducer, fiber optic front sight, still waiting on heatshield to be made).

The Supernova would be cheaper/the same after the cost of a few things is factored in. I'd say for pumps these are the best 2 choices going.

For semi i've had or handled most and they all jam, pumps eat up even the cheap stuff.

A well maintained semi is very reliable. In thosands of round my M4 NEVER failed to function.
My M2 has seen several matches and practice sessions without failure...

Sure... Pumps are "supposed" to "maybe" be more reliable, but... 'Nothing more painfull to watch than a shooter who doesn't know how to "handle" his guage...
Short stroking every round and breakin' stuff...
Well... It's not as painful as it is funny...

I had an M4, didn't feed the cheapest stuff as several others I know wouldn't. Did a training course where all the instructors ran the M2-they didn't cycle great, Had 3 Mossberg 930s, 1 Turkish Kral, 1 Hatsan MPA, and a few more semi models. All had jams at some point. My Mossy pump never a single jam, I'd take a reliable pump over a reliable semi anyday. To each their own but a jammed semi vs a non jammed pump will make the pump beat the semi on most stages.

I witnessed that event. It was both funny and painful to watch at the same time.:D

There is a reason why the Benelli m2 is the most popular shotgun in 3gun competition.

Agreed...

You can't take three steps in any direction without knockin' over several M2's at any major 3-gun event... The FN SLP(?) is making a name for itself, but... Everywhere you look at the majors it's Benelli... Benelli... Benelli

I'm currently building a rem 1100 for both ipsc style and sporting clays. I'm using 2 different barrels a 28" vented rib choked and a 20.5". The 20.5" is being cut now, I still need to find a gunsmith in the Victoria area to tap the barrel for thin wall chokes. Can't wait for it to be finished.

I have a +3 rnd extension in the mail, but it will be plugged at 5.

I have seen way more 870s jam due to short stroking (more operator error than gun, but still a noticeable problem), than semi's failing to feed. But pumps do have the capacity advantage.

Pump: get a Supernova / Nova and a nordic components extension tube.

Semi: get a Benelli M2. You can have the magazine tube fit 5.9x 3" shells (so you just can barely not fit that 6th 3" shell in). It can then hold 6 2.75" shells legally, as it was designed for a 3" shell. 1 in chamber, 1 ghost loaded gives 8 in the gun.
