Hello everyone, I checked the search & could not find what I was looking for so Im starting this question / advice thread.
I need to get a Chest rig/Vest for 3 gun comp but there is one factor & that is I shoot a mag fed shotgun (Valtro 7rnd mags) So I need something with enough capacity for shotgun, AR & possibly handgun mags but I do already have a IPSC set up for the handgun. Please let me know your thoughts, see your pictures, tell me brand names & stores. Thanks in advance.

if you wear a vest like that at a three gun match jesus will kill a midget, stuff him, dress him as an ewok and sell him at a starwars convention

Think about the way you are going to reload if you find yourself shooting in the prone position. Nothing funnier than watching a guy with a Tavor trying to reload from a vest in the prone position!

Meh... Go ahead and buy an expensive chest rig... Shoot a few matches. Realize chest rigs are too slow, clumsy and hot to wear in the summer and then toss the rig in favour of a higher speed lower drag carry all your #### on a belt around your waist arrangement.

Yeah, I'm with 667 on the chest rigs. Way too hot in summer. I built my belt rig around a SOC-C Molle belt and it's worked great so far. Just need to get my hands on some of the Cali Comp Works speed strippers with the molle backs and I'm done. There are some threads on M4Carbine.net and Lightfighter that show the possibilities. Do a search on 'war belts'.

Kind of like this. Note the required flashlight:

Same as seeing a guy shooting an AR as a bolt gun :D

Good points on the belt rig I also run a SOC-C belt with BFG Ten Speed pouches for rifle in it and it is very slick too. However, I gotta say that training is the key with either a chest rig or belt rig.

I don't see an advantage of one over the other but I shoot and train with either one on a regular basis. A belt rig makes rifle reloads more like pistol reloads though and for some folks who are experienced with pistols it works much better than a chest rig.

As for upsetting the masses with a rig that makes baby-Jesus cry... if we keep capitualting we'll be running around with finger guns saying pow pow and not shooting real ones. I'm sick of the shooting sports getting all pc over rigs, guns, clothes.

Some people need to wake up and realize that to antis anything with guns is evil.

Yah I never even considered shooting prone even though we do in IPSC sometimes, very good point to bring up when choosing gear for competition.
Soooo basically chest rig is not a good choice if the COF includes a prone shooting position. But i think I will still have trouble building a belt to accomadate Valtro shotgun mags as orig stated and AR mags & handgun mags. Heard some good points but does anybody have an answer to my particular question based on experience with a mag fed shotgun set up, picutres would be great as well guys. This might be easier than I think and a visual would really help.

Amen.

Belt works extremely well, I use one to, mainly for my pistol mags. I also use a vest or chest rig as well depending on what happening.

One reason for this, is you'll find at 3 gun matches you can only put so many pistol, rifle and shotgun mags on your belt ;)

+1.
There is only so much 'real estate' on a belt....
You start having so much s**t hanging off your belt that NONE of it is where you want it for quick...brainstem level...access when your attention should be on your targets, cover, round count, etc.....
Belt's are nice...but there's a reason I have at least three different rigs...belt alone...belt + vest...vest alone..depending on what the course of fire (tactical situation), and the type of 'implement's' that one has selected.
(I guess that's why Farmboy has made so much $ from me....the never ending search for 'mag pouch nirvana'!)

OK so what I'm getting is be ready for whatever COF they might throw at you. I guess that is the only way to look at it. Thanks guys I will narrow it down to what is functional & comfortable.

I just finished answering this question in another thread. I'll repeat my post here.

Ok, here ya go. I've got a Condor Mulitcam plate carrier that I use for 3-gun matches. It's an amazing unit. I was worried about it fitting me because I'm smaller than average but it is almost infinitely adjustable so I was able to get it to fit perfectly.

The pouch on the far left is a Condor Double Stacker M4 Mag Pouch. Works great for regular M4 mags as well as LAR mags attached together.

The middle pouch is a 5.11 Radio Pouch (58718) in Dark Earth. I bought it at Dave's Tactical in New West. It fits the Grizzly mag perfectly. I'd prefer it came in multicam but I guess that's tough luck. The pouch is just rigid enough that the mag slides in and out easily. It came with elastic tie downs but I took 'em off. Although I shoot 3-gun matches, I'm not running and diving around vigorously enough that I've got to worry about mags falling out of pouches. Plus, it's not as if my life depends on not having a mag fall out. It's much faster to get 'em out without the straps anyway.

The pouch on the right is an HSGI Modular Open Top Universal Mag Pouch. I bought it at Dave's Tactical as well. It does not work very well with the Grizzly mags. While I can get them in it, there is a jutting piece of metal on the side of the mags that catch the edge of the pouch, and make it all but impossible to extract the mags quickly.

The pouch on the far right is a Maxpedition RolyPoly Medium dump pouch. One word "Awesome". 'Nuff said.

There is another pouch that I want to try out. It's a TT 7.62/.308 Single Mag Pouch from Dave's Tactical. I think they might be just about perfect because they are designed for the larger 7.62 magazine. Also, it's shorter so they might not catch on that piece of metal sticking out on the side of the Grizzly mags. They didn't have any the last time I was there so I don't know how good they will fit. If you end up picking one up please let me know how it works out.
