looking to try 3 gun this summer, but would like to find a non restricted rifle/carb that will fill that void. I have looked at a benelli mr1, h&k sl8, and kel-tec su16, but are there any other viable, or better options? Or are there any reasons that any of these guns would be a better choice?

There is no reason why any of those guns couldn't work...I would suggest one that takes AR mags to keep the costs down a bit....and one that can have optics easily mounted. The swiss arms is also a contender, though very expensive.

I would strongly suggest a Tavor if you are not stuck on AR ergonomics, ACR if you are.

Watching someone with a tavor clear a jam is heartbreaking when seconds matter. Why would anyone want to spend almost 3 thousand dollars when an awesome 1 moa American made ar 15 can be had for $1000. However, the acr would be my choice if i had the money to dump on a 2 moa $3000 dollar rifle.

Because the OP was asking about non-restricted perhaps?

Which IMO shouldn't really matter. 3-gun marches are held at ranges after all.

OP, if you wanna try 3-gun, get a used AR. If you don't like it you can sell it without much loss. Anything that compares favorably to a $1000 AR costs over $2500 for a non restricted firearm. If cost doesn't matter, then acr xcr tavor or sl8 are the NR rifles that are well built and reliable, albiet expensive.

Might have something to do with having very little range time for practice, but living on a farm where NR can be practiced with every day. Thats my scenario, and my handgun skill shows it. I try to compensate with regular dry fire drills, but that only helps to an extent and can not fully make up for the lack of range time.

Seems to me OP specified NR.

One can frequently pick up a Tavor for close to $2k, and I have never seen a Tavor jam be more difficult to clear then an AR, likely who ever you were watching was not well practiced and familiarized with the Tavor.

Lastly, ACR is every bit as accurate as a high quality AR, as long as the ACR is also sporting a high quality conversion by Herron Arms.

VZ 58 with B&T magwell adapter so it will take 7.62 pistol mags, SKS from HI CAL with their mag adapter to take 7.62 pistol mags, or try a T-97 flat top. CZ 58's should be available in 5.56 as well.

I have tried my SL-8 for CQB type stuff and it's pretty heavy, but runs really well - with the Spuhr magwell adaptor. It is heavy and a bit hard to balance well on a sling tho. I recently purchased a T97 FTU and tried it, but after oe range session ordered the lower hand guard, as the safety was almost impossible to use for anything where speed mattered at all. Looking forward to the LHG as it moves the safety where it should be. Without the LHG, is did shoulder well and shoot decent.

Keltec with AR stock.
Your best choice, aside from an actual AR-15.

reasons for a non restricted... I work in alberta but live in nb, where a 223 is about all I can play with year round. I don't want the hassle of transport when traveling cross country. Nb has very few ranges, and even less good ones, so the chances of me making a 1.5 hr trip to shoot paper is pretty slim when I can go 5 minutes from my house and shoot all day, and lastly, it will be my first foray into 3 gun, so I would rather buy something I will enjoy for multiple uses, in the event I find 3 gun not for me. Not saying at all that I wont own an ar style, just that I want to play now, and take time to find the ar I want, if I like the sport

what Grip and AR-15 Stock Adapter is this ?

It's a prototype Keltec stock made earlier this year by a company called "Salem 6 Arms".

I'm actually not sure if it ever went into full production, or if it's still in the works.

You could look them up, and send them an email.
Maybe if they get enough emails, they will start pumping them out?

I think they mainly deal with Akdal shotgun builds, but want to explore other markets.

Have you considered a Robinson Armament XCR-L? It is Non-Restricted and might meet your needs.

Make sure you pick one up and carry it around for a few minutes before buying one.

Sure, they're non-restricted. But they are also very big and heavy.

Nice gun overall. I just don't like that much weight.

How about a pistol-calibre rifle like a Beretta or Thureon Defence? Both are available as non-restricted and have the advantage of 10 round mags. The mag pouches from your pistol will work for the rifle.
