3 Gun Questions

I guess my answer was a little short. Nice description Runningfool. My club has defined Stage DQ and Match DQ rules. I am a bit on the fence on whether Stage DQs should be used. We have been fortunate enough that we haven't had to use either since I started shooting matches at this club.

During a stage dropping an unloaded firearm is a Stage DQ, dropping a loaded firearm is a Match DQ. Similarly, if an unloaded firearm is abandoned and safe muzzle direction is not maintained it is a Stage DQ, if it is loaded it is a Match DQ.

just wanted to chime in, after reading this post so far, don't think that anyone has answered the OPs original question of where to shoot 3 gun in the Kingston area, i too am interested in shooting 3 gun and would like to add to his question of where to shoot 3 gun or at the very least where to go so that newbs to the sport can learn and maybe get a little mentoring and introduction into the sport. seeing it on youtube is one thing but alot more interesting in real life, I am in the niagara area so to add to the original question on top of the Kingston area i would like to add where in the Niagara area is there 3 gun?? Thanks for any input you fellow nutters can give.

Not sure how far you are willing to drive but The Galt Sportsmens Club has been hosting 3gun events for the past several years. We have a match coming up this weekend (June 5th-6th) and if you are in the area and want to check it out shoot me a PM. We also hold 3gun practices one Saturday each month - you are welcome to come and watch but unfortunately only members can participate. There have been several 2 gun matches in SW Ontario in the past few years but sadly, very few 3gun matches. In fact, thinking back over the last couple of years, I can't recall an event in the region where I've got to shoot all 3 guns during a stage outside of the matches at Galt.

At some majormatches, dumping a gun in an unsafe condition is only a stage dq

True...
I think it all boils down to or it shoukd boil down to what's "safe".
Is a loaded firearm left facing in a safe direction "really" an imminent threat..?
As long as noone touches it... No.
So I don't think it's warranted to send a shooter home.
Keep in mind... all the major US matches, at least the ones I go to all have entry fees in the hundreds of dollars.
There are travel expenses for most shooters too.
I think match directors really try to avoid DQing people if at all possible.
I mean they're trying to make it so everyone has a good experience. Shooters, sponsors etc...
Of late I've seen it where dropping an unloaded gun isn't even a stage DQ... Thank goodness as my pistol jumped out of my holster.
I'd be crying if I'd been DQ'D after driving all the way to New Mexico!
I mean... yes my pistol is on the deck, but it's empty... It's a rock as they say... pick it up and keep going!!

East Elgin Sportsman's Association near London has run them in the past.

I understand exactly what you're saying but have to ask, if it's "unsafe" enough to rate a stage DQ, shouldn't it be unsafe enough to rate a match DQ?

Maybe if it's not unsafe enough to send a guy home for, it shouldn't cost him the stage DQ either.

There was a huge thread on brIan Enos a while back. ...some people said the exact thing you are saying and there was no shortage of disagreement. ...there was even discussion about what a loaded gun is, especially in the case of a jam

We've had tons of discussion locally about this stuff.

What's "unsafe"? What are appropriate consequences? We don't want to encourage sloppiness by being to lenient but we don't want to put everyone in a straightjacket either. It's a tough subject.

It would be so much easier to just show up to someone else's events and shoot rather than organizing.

I think that's what I'm trying to say... IMHO you should get DQ'd for "safety infractions". NOT "stage DQ'd", but DQ'd period.
I do not believe dropping, or having an unloaded gun fall from a holster is inherently unsafe and at the matches I run that's how we roll.
Now... Drop a loaded gun, sweep the spectators or throw a round over the berm and you're done. Match DQ.

I also don't believe in setting people up to be DQ'd... Mitigating the possibility of DQ's happening is an important aspect of stage design.
Shoot enough matches and you'll see instances where the stage design has a part to play in any possible DQ.
These "DQ traps" are often pointed out to shooters, but... if they weren't there in the first place RO's and shooters alike wouldn't have to worry about 'em.

I've shot a few 3GN matches there but when I stop and think about it, I can't recall any where I got to shoot all 3 guns in one stage. The last 3GN match they held I think there was one stage that involved 3 guns but I wasn't one of the lucky few who was given the chance to shoot it.

It's been a while, but we've run several "3-Gun" matches at GRGC....

'Pretty sure you were there.. LOL

Hey, you conveniently left out the first part of my sentence, "thinking back over the last couple of years, I can't recall...." ;)
Your last one was awesome and I think it would have been in 2013 iirc. Sooooooooo any planned for 2015? :d

All the 3gun nation classier matches had all three guns on all stages. But honestly, it seems 3 gun is quickly becoming 2 gun stages

Stage design is an important part of avoiding DQ traps as is the RO's walk through of the stages prior to the match. Some stages look great on paper but need some tweaking on the ground. Stages should be fun and challenging but not set the competitor up for failure.

Not being able to use all three guns can sometimes be due to the range licence which can restrict firearm types, calibers, target type and placement. The range I belong to has 5 ranges that stages can be built on but the range licences restrict what can be done. Our 25m range is pistol only, 50m range is pistol and shotgun, the 75m, 100m and 300m ranges permit rifle, pistol and shotgun. Depending on stage design pistol may or may not be used as there is potential for ground strikes to leave the range if the stage is built to far up range. Doubling up stages on one range leads to a bottleneck so while it can be done we try to avoid it.

Well... 'Not to make excuses... No, totally making excuses...
Setting up and running a true 3-gun match that is top quality is very difficult given the time/real estate available and range use restrictions we have to live with.
The big US matches are awesome because they have huge facilities which can be used for days/weeks and thus can handle a very high number of shooters.
The best I can do is run a one day event... On a Saturday.
We always have to cap participation because there's only so much daylight.
