Hi,

I have decided to try my hand at 3 gun/multi gun this year and have started picking up gear but could use some advice.

For my firearms I’ll be using:

DMPS 16”
Girsan regard 16 compact 9mm
Girsan MC312.

What I’m debating right now is either buying a HSGI chest rig or going with a true competition belt.

The competition belt seems pretty straight forward but I like the thought of a chest rig (having deployed with them) but am having a tough time finding a molle compatible shotgun shell caddy.

Thinking for a chest rig I’d need:

4 x 30rd AR pouches to hold coupled LAR mags
4 x pistol mag pouches
1 x 12 shell caddy
1 x retention holster
1 x dump pouch
1 x utility/misc pouch

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Was think the MAV which is pretty low, more abdomen then chest, or maybe a battle belt. Would that be more competitive speed wise you think?

I was thinking it be nice to wear in the winter as well as the spring - fall.

OP, you’re thinking like a deployment set up. 3 gun is a fast game. Think lighter and less clutter, the better.

Anything on your upper torso will slow you down. And forget any type of pouch. If you’re going to keep shotshells in your pouch, you’re slow already. And you won’t be retaining mags.
You won’t need a Level 3 retention holster either.

Watch some 3G competitions on YT and see what the top shooters use for gear. Think IPSC set up vs. CQB.

I have a belt with a Alpha X holster, 2 rifle mag pouches, 2 shotgun caddies which hold 8 rounds each and a mixture of regular pistol pouches and magnets (all DAA gear which I recommend)

I use a shotgun chest rig sometimes for stages where there is a large round count or I have a mix of shot and slugs. Even on those stages I still run the belt and shotgun caddies.

In summary I would recommend a belt as I find it faster and more useful / versatile.

I think realistically it’ll be somewhere in the middle. I want to be somewhat competitive but with two young kids + life in general I know I won’t be doing the required level of practice or trips for competition that will see me highly competitive....at least for now lol.

Trying to find that middle ground gear is what I’m going for. Taco’s with mag pouches is where I was leaning but more triple panel not singles.

Take a look at the Safariland ELS. It is a modular system and you can change the load out for each stage making it very versatile. Many of the 3gunners I shoot with use it.

If you are using LAR mags coupled end to end, you'll probably never need more than 2 AR mag pouches. Most stages are started with 1 mag in gun anyway. I use a belt with 2 pistol mags and one AR mag pouch but bring an extra of each to put on for certain stages. Safariland ELS clips are nice for caddies on a belt so you can take them off when you are not shooting, bending over to pick stuff up and reset stages is a pain with a caddie in front of your waist. You can mount an ELS clip to a tech lock if you aren't using a safariland belt.

I would recommend a belt (like a double alpha...get one size bigger than your waist) and a mounting system that allows you to switch up your kit a little bit for specific stages.

For example most of my gear is G-Code, and everything has a RTI mount. I have a double AR mag holster, 2 pistol mag holsters that carry two mags each, and a 12 shell caddy made by Invictus practical, plus my pistol holster of course. I also run a weight belt that I wrap around my chest that can hold 32 shells (Invictus practical caddies mounted to a weight belt for comfort) for shotgun only stages. (You can buy Invictus practical from Wolverine)

I would say buy once, cry once. I tried a couple different products before I found what was most efficient for me. You could also head to a match with what you have and see what others use. Most people will let you try their gear as well.

It's important to have fun, but it doesn't take long before you get the competitive spirit, even if it's with yourself and your own personal best.

You won't regret making a investment in your 3gun gear, even if you can only make a few matches a year.

As with any practical shooting sport do not go out and spend on what you think you will need because you will eventually alter your equipment. What you think you like will not be what works best for your build and skill. Watch the other competitors and take note of their gear setups.

Solid point

Another vote for belt. I see guys running chest rigs, but no one at the top end. A chest rig for shotshells maybe in a super heavy shotgun stage.

Double alpha stuff is fantastic, and their alpha rail system provides nice modularity.

Its nice to be able to add and remove based on the stage. If i dont need a lot of shotshells i carry an ar mag up front, but if i need all my shotshell carriers i can move the ar mag to the back.

For shotshell carriers try out a few for what works for you. The carbon arms backbone has great reviews, but i struggled to quad load till i got a Double Alpha, suddenly my quad loads were great.

Why not use a PCC with the identical mags to your pistol on a comp belts?

I did think of that but I went with an AR mostly because I like shooting them (Reminds of the days I wasn’t stuck behind a desk) but also to have in the gun locker in the event the liberals go ahead with an OIC and there is a grandfather clause.

Best answer!

Also, there are 3G stages where you reach out to 300 or more yds, depending on where you are. Makes 9mm PCCs a tough challenge.
