3 Gun Tips and Tricks

"Outlaw" is not a negative term or, have any bearing on legitimacy.

I use the term just so new competitors realize that our club is not affiliated with any organized 3 gun body and that we have our own rules and scoring system.

Also, nice work on the scatter gun. I was too nervous the first time I did one to use a grinder and filed it down by hand... now, straight to the power tools.

It depends on who is using the term, and having your own rules and scoring system does make you an "organized 3 gun body". Don't sell yourself short.

Die grinder, Dremel and flat sanding bar on the VM pictured.

That looks really good.

Thanks.

Does your finger get stuck in that opening on the lifter? Looks clean to me

Mine doesn't, but I bend my thumb so the last knuckle is holding the lifter down as the tip pushes the shells in. Guys who use a straight thumb or wear gloves can get the tip trapped by the forks. That can be fixed with the Rem competition lifter or a welded one, or by opening up the end of the receiver more.

One day I would like to see a Canadian 3 Gun Nationals on the same scale as the Canadian IPSC Nationals.

Of course this is a ways off as there is no standardized rule set or scoring or even targets across the country at this time but, maybe one day!

I can just imagine a 5 day event, 300 competitors, vendors, sponsors, etc... great times!

In the absence of a premier national organizing body, I think the 3gun match with the most entries becomes the de facto nationals.

To my knowledge the biggest ones in the West half the country in 2017 will be the Redneck and Prairie Fire. I think Redneck 2016 had about 100 entries, and Prairie Fire is new but set up to handle up to 200. Not sure what the biggest in the East is.

I am planning to attending both of those matches (work permitting). I am really impressed with the level of competition (and host clubs) that has emerged.

'Just got home from the Blue Ride Mountain 3-Gun match...
We can talk all we want about "3-Gun", but unless you get out and shoot one of these majors you'll never really have a first hand idea of what 3-Gun is or can be.
Well... What we do down there is pretty much a non-starter here in Canada as there's no way to set up or run stages remotely similar without somebody ####ting their pants.
This was my 7th BRM3G and although the closest I get to beating Jerry Miculek is getting to the buffet line ahead of him... It's always a blast. A humbling blast.

Already have 2027's match written in my calendar... October 19/20/21.

Yeah I was just looking at it. How many squads was there, 14? Damn. Thats like a fantasy dream match. The stages they have are impressive too. I wish something like this was in Canada. Thanks for the link.

TIP:

If at all possible, plan to stay for a little bit after the match is over and say thank you to some of the volunteers that help to put on the match you just shot.

Some matches will expect you to stay and help clean up / tear down, but even if they don't try to stick around and help and say thank you in person.

Obviously, if you have a 6 hour drive back home and you work the next day that may not be possible but, if you can, it is welcomed.

What are the rules for safety selectors on shotguns generally? I know safety has to be engaged to ground the gun. What about during reloading etc?

Depends who's running the match...
At BRM3G dumping a gun "safe" meant either it was empty or simply had the safety engaged.

And as far as when rifle/shotgun is in use, safety engagement doesn't matter? ie for reloads. As long as it's engaged when you dump the gun?

Correct, same as with your pistol and rifle. That's the MP3G way, others places may do it differently.

Also, as 667 said, if the shotgun is empty chamber and mag, and open, that is also acceptable without needing the safety as well.

Okay great. The AR is no problem to manipulate the safety but the crossbolt on my shotgun is slow and awkward to engage.

What kind of shotgun? Perhaps a jumbo safety is made for it, or you could decrease the radius of the safety detent, or clip a coil out of the detent spring? Could also try chamfering the edges of the safety that catch on the detent? My Stoeger safety was hard. Ridiculously hard, like, flip gun on side, push with FEELING against braced opposite hand hard...no good for 3gun. I clipped two coils off the detent spring, and it clicks back and forth like a....hmmm...stiff mechanical pencil? Much better, at any rate.

It's a Winchester SXP pump. The safety isn't too hard or anything. It would just be a lot of extra movement to be constantly reaching around the trigger guard to engage constantly if that was necessary. Flipping the safety on to dump the gun is no problem though.
