3 Gun Tips and Tricks

More so looking for a tip... do most guys run red dots or scopes for their ar's?
Or do you guys always change it up depending on the course, or simple personal preference?

Thanks.

There are a few guys, mostly the younger ones with better eyes, running RDS, but there are a lot of shooters running 1-4 or 1-6 optics now.

I haven't shot a match with a RDS in 3 or 4 years. I suppose if I knew the match was all short range I might set up for it with an Aimpoint, but I'm really not much slower with my scope on 1x.

^^^This...I used to use RDS exclusively on my AR's but I've since added a 1x6 scope on my primary shooter....even for CQB matches I find the negligible loss in speedy target acquisition is more than made up for in accuracy. And it means I actually hit targets out beyond 100m the first shot rather than sometimes having to take 2 or 3 to get the hit. Damn old eyes.

Im building a tac iron upper so that I can run either based on the distance in the match.... For most matches around here, a red dot would be enough.

There is such a thing as too much magnification ....especially on transitions people tend to have to search for targets, especially if the FOV on the scope is limited

Also, if you have an astigmatism RDS optics are not a good idea. I ran an RDS for a while. They have spoiled me. Most of my go to optics now have some sort of illumination.

I've heard that from lots of guys but have never had an issue with my astigmatism and Aimpoints, at least.

As I understand it...any time matches put RDS in optics....it was pretty much the death of the iron sight division....maybe Canada is different though

Yes. We still have a few guys running irons. So RDS is optic or a division on its own. We have not made up our minds yet. But will know soon.

We have a lot of mil shooters that want to shoot guns close to work guns.

Very hard to make everyone happy

So I hope to try out 3 gun one day this spring if I can find a place in central Alberta. I have guns and holster from my Black badge course (them holsters any good for 3 gun? CR speed or something, but I wouldn't trust to run or crawl in it) I have yet to use my free ipsc match, perhaps I should do that too.

Anyway, as I don't know what I will like till I see a few other guys set ups, what is the minimum I can show up with regarding holster and ammo belts/vests? Or something really cheap, which works ok, that I can ditch or donate later, once I figure out what I really want to use.

Oh yea, I have Beo and LAR mags (with or without wedge), pump shotty, and pistol mags will be 1911

The last 3 gun match in Medicine Hat had five stages. The maximum number of rounds for a stage for pistol was 23, rifle 18 and shotgun 16. As long as you can carry a little more than that you should be good to go. We have had guys put pistol and rifle mags in their jeans pockets and shotgun shells in carpenter pouches or slings with loops for shells. If you have a holster that is suitable for IPSC it should be suitable for 3 gun. No need to spend money right away. Get in contact with the club you will be shooting at and see if they have any specific requirements or rules.

One warning, if a match requires shot shells and rifled slugs make sure you can separate them. A carpenters pouch with mixed ammo can be a problem when reloading quickly and a slug gets fired at a target designated for shot.
