re: 3-position safety

I like the standard factory version on Mauser 98s, mostly because of the way they can work as built-in bolt takedown tools, but in general, on most rifles, they seem to be faddish, unnecessary, and often expensive add-ons. I'll take the simplicity of a solid two-position safety any day, just so long as it locks down the bolt handle.

For me the model 70 wing safety is the favourite. I prefer that it blocks the firing pin, and the action can be opened with the safety on. To each their own though.

Hard to call it a fad when it’s 130 years old, and only found on a small handful of rifles. I agree though, the bolt lock is the important feature. I really don’t care about unloading the rifle with the safety on.

I do prefer the safety on a Winchester to the Mauser.

I think the "classic" wing safeties are lousy compared to the sliding safety on an X Bolt.

Firing pin travel is blocked pretty well by all safeties... something has to break for the pin to travel forward ...

I also think the importance of locking the bolt handle down is very over rated.

Locking the bolt handle down is big deal to me, had a Ruger American and walked from who knows how long with an open bolt and empty chamber. I use a browning x-bolt now with no issues

Anything that is more than just a trigger blocks cool here. Don't really need or care about 2 vs 3 positions. If it locks the bolt down, cool. If not, cool.

Has never really made any practical difference.

Maybe if I had to pick a favorite, its the tang safety like on an American, but never really had one I dislike.

Use what's on the ker-pow if you like what it is.
I don't giver much thought.
It's a tool, user as it is.

Custom build, spend what you like.

I like the M70 safety the best, it physically blocks the striker instead of just blocking the trigger

In reality what is the difference it the 'striker' is blocked or the trigger is blocked?

You realize with the trigger blocked the striker can not fire without some part failing...

Just the same as if the part that is blocking the striker fails it can fire.

6 of one and a half dozen of the other...

I prefer a 3 position over a 2 but I’ve got both and they work fine, locking the bolt is a feature I like. It’s not going to get pulled open while slung over the shoulder while hiking through thick brush, the Enfield is a nice 2 position with the bolt locked while it’s on safe. I use the second position on a 3 position safety to unload, all my hunting rifle have box mags so it’s easy to open the bolt removing the chambered round and drop the mag making safe.

I love a 3-P safety. Having the bolt locked is a nice but not necessary feature, I do use the middle position to unload my rifle pretty much every time, again not necessary, buy nothing wrong with another level of safety never hurts. Mostly because the ergonomics are what I am used to... my thumb just goes there when the heat is on... analogous to when I switched from pump shotguns to a semi, and it took two seasons to stop pumping the forend between shots.
