Only three powders? Never. I couldn't imagine only having three powders. To be honest, the thought scares me a little.
If anything, the choice of three says more about the kind of shooting you do. If you love Varget, you're certain to be feeding a centrefire rifle in a certain cartridge range. Trail Boss says you're a cowboy. Each powder tells a story. Gaps between your choices say you're not reloading anything that you can't.
It's a mental exercise, certainly your choices would say something about your priorities but also about your experience level. Trail Boss isn't just for cowboy shooting, and powders can have more than one usefulness.
Some powders are broadly versatile, others not as much. Unique can load pistol, shotgun, and rifle. 4895 downloads well and covers a broader cartridge spectrum IMO than Varget. 4198 and RL7 also download well and are also first choice for many straight walled rifle cartridges from antiques to belted magnum. 4350 is useful in bottleneck cases from 243 to ultra mag.
So in my choosing Unique / 4198 / 4350 - I covered everything I shoot from .222 to 458 Lott. Some would not be optimum choice but still allow me to make decent loads for what I reload the most.
I am surprised the thought has scared someone..? Maybe that's an exaggeration.
