Hey all!! So i got my Lapua Brass and 165gr Swift Scirocco's in the mail today... I Was going to go with Superformance powder and try and get 2900+fps but if thats not achivable then its not a big concern. I was courious.. should i load the swifts like a Barns TSX due to the heavy Jacket configuation or jsut treat it like any bonded bullet.. Im really excited to let lead fly outta my new winchester 70 featherlight. hopefully it likes those bullets. I have alot of other powders on hand as well.. IMR4831, 4007SSC,Benchmark, Varget, BL-C2,H4895 and IMR 4320.. So no need for me to buy new powders lol.

Thanks All!!

Josh Ackert

I think 4831 might be a bit slow for 165's in -06, I would be using a powder in the 4350 burn rate range myself. Too lazy to look up burn rate charts right now lol.

51 grains 4320 with 165sst yielded 2850fps and 59 grains H4350 yielded 2900fps with same bullet in my vanguard. Both sub MOA out to 300 which is as far as I tried them. 3.24" COAL. Superformance was way to slow. My batch seemed about the same burnspeed as H4831.

swift manuel is showing imr 4831 starting at 52.1 gr, 56.0 max. varget starting at 46.0, 49.5 max. just finished loading up my 300 win mag with some scirrocco 2, after doing some reading about how they like a good jump i ran the .050 off the lands and had very good results with my groups. i also read how using other loads a person has with different bullets is not suggested as the jacket on swift bullets can add more pressure then expected, hence the lower max powder.

Good morning all! So I loaded up some rounds last night using 4007ssc cause I only have 12 pounds of it lol.... Started at 55gr and worked up to 56.2 ... So 55,55.2,55.5 etc
Don't know when I'll get a chance to try them but ill keep you posted on my findings and velocity. Thanks

Yes thanks mbogo3. I had 4 pounds that were affected by the recall. Got a cheque in the mail.. but still had another 12 pounds lol.... yeah it was one of my favourite powders for the 7mm-08 and 22-250 so when i heard they were going to stop making it i quickly ran out to my supplier and bought as many pounds of it as i can. I hoping the powder works just as well for the 30-06.. if not ill go back to IMR4831 or varget or try my hand at superformance although my groups were not great with it in the last 30-06 i used it in.

So I loaded up some rounds with 4007SSC and took of to the range to try the 165gr Swift Scirocco's and all though my accuracy was not the greatest(partly due to a heavy trigger) velocity was top notch.
The load i settled on was 56gr of IMR4007SSC which a 3 shot average got me 3084fps from a 22" barrel.. Accuracy was 3 shots at 1.5inches with 2 of them touching.

This will be my moose load which i think would be excellent.

30-06, about 150 yards. I was using h4350, but off the top of my head cannot remember how much. Was a decent 5x5, scored 137 gross.

out of curiosity, how far off of the lands were you ackertjosh?

MK77. All my rounds were made to factory COAL. I normally like to check but since im in the moving process i didnt have my rifle with me to do such thing so just made the rounds to Factory COAL.. Now that being said i have read forms on the Swifts in the past saying they like a bit of a jump. How much of a jump they are in my Winchester Model 70 Featherweight i have no idea.. Once i get back home and have both on hand i will let you know what the measurements are if that works for you..

Im going to be making 10 rounds to check again.. a group of 5 @ 100 and if i see what i like then i will take it to 300 at the gong and see how i make out.

Thanks again
Josh

That's very impressive velocity!
I use surplus powder 47SL-10 ("slow lot H414") in my 30-06 RCBS IMP rifle with 165gr GMX bullets getting "only" 3100fps in 23" barrel and no problem with high pressures.
I guess the advancements in gun powder (like RL17 for instance) makes previously impossible things possible now.

I honestly had a hard time believing what i was seeing when it came to the velocity.. so i grabbed my 22-250 to test those loads and well at the chrony was not lying to me... so it kinda makes me giggle that my 30-06 is gonna be one hell of a moose gun :D

I'm guessing here, but 3084 fps in a 22 inch barrelled 30-06 sounds a wee bit hot to me, even with modern powders like RL 17 and IMR 4007sc.

I have both powders myself, and by all appearances, a 165 grainer at 3000 in a 24 inch tube seems about where I would stop.

When the weather warms up a bit, I will dig out the transducer and give some pressure figures. Ill predict well above 65,000 psi average for the
load you are using.

Regards, Dave
