I literally grabbed them as a middle of the road option. That and it was all the retailer had at the time…

Surprise, surprise.. my 700 Mtn liked them, so I didn’t find a need to try anything else or reloads.

I’d like to try those 175gr LRX’s at some point, although I’m thinking they’d probably be better suited in a regular sporter (.625dia) barrel, not the pencil thin one of the Mountain series.

Agreed on the terminal ascent definitely best bullet around and I love n550 in the 30-06

Agreed. I'd have no problem shooting 400 yards with a 200gr at 2600 fps. 2.5" high at 100 and your only going to be 20ish inches low at 400. On a moose thats not a hard shot.

Thats what I was thinking. Its not a 200 grain round nose from a 35 Remington hahaha.

Difference between that and a 180 ain't much when you consider the kill zone of the game animals OP is talking about.

Shot a couple of my first moose with those. Well, the Accubond, but Winchester was loading them as "Combined Technology" ammo. Nickel casing, black moly bullet, red tip.

They worked.

Pretty much every bullet that's been mentioned already will do, and a whole bunch nobody has talked about.

But no mention yet of the most under rated bullet, the Hornady Interlock; dollar for dollar it can't be beat. Remington Corelokt is also very good and near identical performance as the Interlock.

Accurate shooting, correct shot placement is the most important factor.

I think the 30-06 would be the perfect platform for 215gr bergers. I want to try it eventually but I am shooting them in a 300mag. Other than that maybe 180gr accubond. Shoot flatish enough and work well to 400yards.

I would imagine any other "common" load for the '06 that your rifle liked would also have worked :D

Yes, there are cases where a good ol' cup-n-core may fail, and a TSX, TTSX, monolithic or whatever bullet would have been better... but in all honesty, at normal hunting ranges (definitely less than 400, usually in the 50 to 250 range) most commercial loads and hand loads that comprise a proven bullet design of a grain weight in a workable range and a powder load appropriate to the bullet and gun combo will do just fine.

It's the edge cases that lead to failures, and provide fodder for endless this-or-that and t i t-for-tat arguments on internet fora. But that's part of the fun and the game as well. After all, we all either have a touch of the 'tism or get a bit obsessive about the firearms we own and have fun with. And that's part of the fun too.
 
180gr accubond at 2840 fps out of a 22’’ barrel. 20 off jam put me at 20 off max mag length in a Tikka. Shank is right over shoulder/neck junction.
 
Shoot whichever bullet of the weight range you chose that shoots best out of your rifle.

All of them will do the job if they're placed well on impact.

Doesn't matter what bullet you shoot an animal in the guts with, because it's getting away.
